Cytus: New Monthly Review!

Cytus: New Monthly Review!

New month, new review! Cytus is an extremely good game (though a bit obvious it was made for older phones.) Cytus is a rhythm game, but get this, it has a *story* to it. Woah, gimmick? Nah, Cytus does actually have an interesting story to follow, with each chapter providing one story level to watch/read through as you play the map, slowly understanding the lore behind it's world.
The maps themselves are very fun to play, and the game has an interesting way of making maps, kind of a mix between traditional rhythms like guitar hero where you have to hit notes as they approach a bar, and more inventive rhythms like Osu! Where notes appear across the screen. Cytus melds these two together, having you tap notes as they appear across the bar, and it makes for a really fun experience!
The music is generally going to be J-electronic and Artcore/symphonic hardcore styles of music, though there are occasional rock, alt-pop, and indie style songs sprinkled in to give variety. The songs are all really good, and I can't say there are too many songs I absolutely hated.
As for the actual rhythm game; Beat maps were fun, though occasionally got a bit repetitive. The good ones shine really well, the bad ones are just meh. Not terrible, but meh. The game DOES have manual latency offset which is super nice to see!
Finally the paid aspect of Cytus. Probably the one people most care about. Before playing a song, you have to wait 30 seconds (or watch an ad) to play a song. But if you pay a microtransaction (I believe it's $1.99) you can infinitely retry songs instantly, no more waiting, etc.
There are also dlc styled maps, highlighting certain studios/artists or a certain style of music. For instance, a retro/glitch hop section, a section dedicated to the games most prolific artist Ice-loki (an amazing album I suggest anyone willing to pay for cytus to get), and another dedicated to the studio eyemedia.
All in all, this is probably one of the greatest games on the app store. It's fun, extremely easy to learn, and the story is easy to follow along with, while also giving a very entertaining rhythm game experience!
👍 Pros: Latency calibration, fun beat maps, amazing underground artists, and a cute story to play too.
👎 Cons: waiting between songs can be tedious if you're impatient (and blocked behind a paywall)
Personally I'm willing to throw 2 bucks at rayark for this (and buy dlc's), it was an amazing experience. Definitely not their best game, not even the best game in this genre (personally loved the sequel more that I will be explaining in a separate review, and deemo was also in my opinion way better.)
