I don't know what I was expecting with the new "next-gen" update but here's my take:
As someone who played this game casually for 5 years since its release and 100% f2p (by casually I mean literally 15-30mins a day, sometimes an hour, sometimes nothing at all), I'd say it's a good game to pass the time, like literally just playing it if you have nothing better to do or you just have a quick 10-15mins of free/waiting time, finishing up dailies, and that's it. That's why my progress is decent, I didn't realize I already unlocked and upgraded most class A or S cars, and have good amount of in-game currency.
This is a game that I don't really think about, or play extensively or for long sessions, otherwise I'd constantly hit the paywall, but I don't really care about that. If you want to actually play this game extensively and religously, to the point where you want to unlock everything fast and win as a f2p, that's not happening.
They did upgrade their engine and the lighting and some effects are better and more vibrant. BUT they added some weird depth of field effect and some resolution scaler THAT WE CANNOT CHANGE and it made things a bit more blurrier unecessarily (actually we still cannot fine-tune the graphics settings at all). It also does utilize the phone's gpu and cpu more now. Physics, reflections, and textures are still the same.
The U.I change is good I guess? It looks fresh and stylized, but idk, it looks HEAVILY inspired by NFS Unbound.
Added content are garbage, new multiplayer modes are mid (it's still unbalanced). It's still the same type of content grinding, rewards, and events every season. Full cross-play is a good addition, I finally was about to link my android progress to my steam account, not that it matters anyway. Controls and actual driving gameplay are still infuriating, specially when most players on multiplayer learns that TouchDrive is just all they need, there's literally minimal advantage to actually being able to steer manually other than not accidentally crashing or being taken down.
I really was only able to get this far when it comes to progress and car collection simply because I didn't play the game extensively, I just didn't realize I already unlocked a lot of things.
If you guys want good arcade racing on mobile (that you want to play for long sessions), avoid this one, rather play Ace Racer, Racing Master, CarXStreet, or DriveZone. These other games may be less flashy, but at least it's not as grindy as Asphalt 9 (Unite).
