I was gonna write a really long review but this isn't the place so here it goes: I'm at Level 77 or so. the game is a bizarre mixture of Warframe, Undawn, Phantasy Star Online, Mass Effect and mahjong. if that sounds weird, it is, but it's pretty good
👍 Pros:
-🎮 Gameplay: extremely smooth controls, gamepad support, gyro aim. the actual gunplay feels great and the game gives you a mech suit AND a jetpack. you can fish, play mahjong (yeah I was being serious), or focus on decorating your house once you get bored of the game's well-designed boss fights and dungeons. very fun!
-📖 Storyline: starts out kind of generic but the main quest has twists, character deaths, goofball side characters and some excellent cutscenes later on. world building spices up the somewhat generic "oh no aliens came and now the world is over 😞" plot
-🎨 Graphics: ‼️ incredible on mobile, even better on PC. technically the game has stunning lighting and effects, but the art design is very nice and does a great job supporting the engine's beautiful rendering. best in class for a mobile game. there are some spectacular bosses and beautiful environments, as well as general good variety in environments and enemies.
-🗺️ Map Design: the world of the game consists of multiple semi-open "fields" with quests, resources, enemies, dungeons and other MMO stuff. you unlock them as you level. they range from volcanic islands to destroyed cities to the surface of an orbiting space rock. exploration is rewarding with puzzles, open world bosses, combat trials, random quest triggers and other fun distractions as you avoid deadly weather and go fishing or whatever the hell you got going on
-🎧 Audio Design: seriously, this game sounds tremendous with headphones on. punchy guns, impressive music at the few times it's playing, good voice acting (at least in Japanese), and great atmosphere and spacial audio. go watch a gameplay video with your best earbuds in if you don't believe me
-🧑🤝🧑 Community: this game is currently only available in HK/TW/JP. I can only speak a few horrible broken basic phrases of Japanese. however, even despite this, the games community has been very nice. my mostly Japanese guildmates have been happy to join me for lower level content I haven't beat yet, people regularly thank you for doing dailies with them even if they carried you, and I get random invites to join parties while fishing alone. (fishing really is the best part of any game, including real life) the game has a built-in social media service full of posts with people sharing screenshots of them and their friends in-game together, posting for their progress, trying to find people to play with, or just talking about their day. chat has a translation feature which is helpful, but it isn't available in all features with player text. there are a few Filipino guilds I've seen in game, that might be your best bet for English speaking players.
- 🥴🚫💸 Free To Play Hell: the game is generous with most items needed to progress and PvP modes are mostly balanced to prevent p2w advantage. there is a good amount of free cosmetic items like furniture and outfits. the game doesn't make you feel bad for being poor.
-🌐 Cross-Platform Play: works great between PC and Mobile, as far as I can tell all modes work on both. it's nice to have a full-on MMO you can take with you!
👎 Cons:
-🎁🙀 Gatcha: the game, so far, I've described as being very fair and balanced as a free player. this is true. however, they have to make money somehow, and the way they do that is through the world's most convoluted gatcha system. here's how it works:
if you're a free player, you get a limit 5 pulls a week (4 full price and 1 discounted) from Alliance Premium Supply that you can buy with crystals. mostly it gives you game items, but it can also reward one or two tickets for the gacha. the gacha also mostly gives game items, (sometimes it just gives you some crystals as a "sorry! try again!" except you can't because you only get 5 pulls a week) but it has a chance to give either a cosmetic or the special currency you can use to get a limited cosmetic of your choosing. basically, you get 5 chances at getting a chance to MAYBE get one of the bannered items. it's ridiculous. thankfully the gacha is reserved for certain cosmetics only but it still means you can't even consistently roll for things you want as a free player, much less actually get them
if you buy the games premium currency, you can directly buy tickets to roll the gatcha, and there are some skins that you can buy outright from the shop for pretty reasonable prices. the gatcha rates are still abysmal, but at least you can still play the fashion game without rolling all your money away.
-🎖️ Progression System: there are like 5 different systems for strengthening your equipment alone, let alone the other systems that make your ambiguous power number go up. Arms Inspection helps you out a little bit but the game introduced these systems quickly and doesn't do a good job of emphasizing which ones are important.
-🐞 Performance: needs optimization. the game runs fine if you turn the settings down, but it's a battery eater. PC version has a very inconsistent frame rate, I go from 20 to 60 in the exact same area in the exact same scenario. I have confidence they'll fix this.
BOTTOM LINE: earth: revival is the best survival sandbox PvPvE casual life sim MMOTPS out right now. if you like third person shooters and MMOs and don't mind survival elements, it's a must try. ✳️✳️✳️✳️/5
CORRECTIONS AND ADDENDUMS: -you get 5 premium supply pulls A DAY, not a week. I still have yet to get a cool outfit tho sorry about that, I was half asleep when I wrote this. I'm about to eat a rodeo cheeseburger. love u all, keep on grinding
