Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a sad and an aesthetically appealing game based on the sentimental themes like love and loss with one’s family. This game was created by the Starbreeze Studios and this game is rather unique as the main protagonist is controlled by two brothers, each with different abilities and skills and they travel through this game to save their sick father.
The concept of the game’s gameplay or the central mode of interaction is one of the most vital parts of the game. One brother can only be controlled with an independent analog stick or controls while the second brother is also controlled with the same type of control, and hence teamwork is unavoidable because of the many puzzles and obstacles found throughout the game’s world. The older brother is stronger and can hold more loads, the younger brother is slimmer and can fit where he can’t get through or manipulate small items. This brings a certain level of complexity and fun at the same time especially because the brothers are only controllable independently in certain instances and during the actual gameplay the two have to work hand in hand.
Visually, Brothers: I think that a Tale of Two Sons is simply outstanding. The art style that was adopted in the game is both fairy-tale like and emotional, which makes the game to be very engaging. The environments are diverse and beautiful ranging from forests to snow capped mountains and each is as detailed as to make you feel that your journey has a purpose. Non–verbal communication serves an advantage to the game because the game’s narrative is established through gestures, images and actions that enables the players to have an individualist assessment of the story.
It is however pertinent to note that it is the emotional story most unique to Brothers that truly makes it unique. There are scenes associated with joy, others with sadness and many scenes of the tension before the game ends in such a manner which I am sure, will create a deep emotional impact on anyone who plays the game.
Overall, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a perfect example of game narrative, enriched with outstanding novelties in gameplay and profound feeling of warmth and compassion at its heart. It is one that you can taste, feel, smell and definitely one that you do not forget after the movie’s end credits.
