The Gardens Between is a tender puzzle-adventure sometimes rather upsetting, that shows players companionship, recollection, and the transient nature of time. The Voxel Agents created this game which features both artistic design and play along with easy to contemplate game features joined with an emotional story.
The game is based on the adventure of two best friends Arina and Frendt who have to go through surreal dreamlike islands inhabited by the objects which both of them recognize. It its core, the game is based on the mechanics of time control. Instead of managing the characters, you change the time, that is why you can influence Arina and Frendt to influence objects and open the mechanism switches, changing the environment. Such approach to the gameplay is innovative and offers the players challenging experience, simply because they are forced to think beyond the typical choices.
I concluded that the puzzles themselves are very smart; every level brings new ideas which make one question time and space. The difficulty rises, yet it is never rage-inducing, meaning that even the newly minted gamer is not going to have any issue. The food is balanced, though, letting you feel as you achieved something when solving a puzzle and discovering more of the story.
Another feature that can be noted while discussing The Gardens Between is an impressive work on the art department. The graphics and design are great; when combined with the gentle melodic music, they instantly make you get into the game’s atmosphere, which may be dreamlike. Every island is a reflection of the friends and the memories are complemented by things that can activate the emotional response in the viewers.
Altogether it is quite a short game, however, the memories stays and so does the feeling of the game itself because of the heartwarming story plot and the gameplay twists. The Gardens Between can be highly recommended to everyone who is into puzzle games as well as to those players who were looking for an honest and very touching game about friendship and the role of memories in our lives.
