In a ’steampunk’ city where all the environments exist in soft pencil sketches immediately accessible as playable spaces, the game’s unnamed protagonist is a young boy who finds himself in the Tesla Tower where the game’s puzzles, secrets, and story reside.
The gameplay is based on the use of magnetic fields and electricity to complete more and more challenging tasks. The environments are coherent; each stage looks different from the next and from the lofty metal structures down to the buzzing electrical wiring and machinery. The lack of talk or text further increases the game’s element of intrigue as half of its narrations are done through illustration and animation, thereby posing the players to work as detectives and gather the story as much as they can with their eyes open.
It also offers reasonable challenge, especially in the second part when timing and reaction are needed to solve problems. But, even with it, the game never makes you feel like it’s plotting against you, and getting past a particularly hard level is a great feeling.
To sum up, Teslagrad is an intriguing and aesthetically pleasing puzzle-based platformer game with a certain degree of difficulty. The major mechanics of the game is based on the principles of magnetism which is pretty much innovative for the genre, so it will definitely appeal to fans of the given kind of gameplay who are eager to solve some puzzles which will really make you think hard.
