Preface by saying i'm a big mecha fan. Grew up with the original battletech games and have played every mech game since.
This game fits the niche perfectly, lots of potential, great art and gameplay. Hopefully the developers will continue to develop it, expand it, and make it a bit more wallet friendly.
From a general perspective, it reminds me a lot of the mech commander games. You control a squad of 4 mechs (not individually) which you can customize and chose from a varied list of mechs and variants, gear, weapons, equipment and so forth. While in combat the game can auto move your squad for you, allowing you to focus on skill usage and overall strategy, or you can take direct control at any time with a on screen joystick. The transition from auto pilot to manual control is seamless and works well.
The game has several game modes such as story, campaign, pvp arena, compound assault, boss fights, faction quests, mine clearing and defense, expeditions, and others. With more coming such as guild wars.
The pros: Lots of mechs each with their own unique flavor. 3 types of damage in a rock paper scissors model (this is both good and bad, see below), lots of gear, shuttles, pilots and other stuff to upgrade. AFK mining and resource extraction, expeditions (multi stage campaigns where you explore the galaxy) diverse enemies with unique abilities, pvp, guild play, bosses and factions to grind rep with.
PVP currently works with a ladder which is a lot of fun. There are announcements in game about an upcoming guild galactic war mode that also looks super fun. They are relatively generous with daily gifts including pulls, and through the shuttleport you can fairly often get another 1 or 2 tokens for pulling a mech/gear.
game mechanics wise, the game offers auto movement for your squad which is super handy, letting you just control skill use. Although for some fights you may need to take manual control (easily done, just use the joystick, the moment you stop moving them they continue moving on their own).
In short the game offers a lot of content, especially considering it is relatively new, all in a high res visual orgasmafest.
The cons:
On my original review comment elsewhere on this site i had mention mech progression, resource grinding and gacha mechanics as cons. But i have since played the game further and it does address my original concerns as follows:
- mech progression: once you build the synteshis lab (requires power generator lvl 5), you can up rank mechs by sacrificing lower ranked ones (4 blues to 1 purple for example), the sacrificial mechs do require to be leveled to 40 and be 4 stars with 4 tune stages. You still require to have multiple squads catered to the damage type of the enemies (you can probably get away with just switching out the main damage dealer to the appropriate dmg type thou, its what i've been doing and it works fine)
- resources : as you progress through the campaign you unlock more and more resources. Grinding for resources is completely fine and doable. Also you eventually also unlock more bosses to grind, including ones that provide unique gear sets with 3 set bonuses as opposed to the regular 2 set bonuses that you pull for. Despite what i say below, resource grinding is not an issue at all, just needed to progress further in game.
- loadouts: there are a lot of loadout flexibility here. From different weapon types, damages, ranges and rof, as well as different formations to cater to specific weapon loadouts, there is a lot to customize here. You can have for example a missile heavy long range squad, or a squad fitted with short range pulverizers that just melt the bugs like butter.
- gacha mechanics/store: the game does give you a bit of premium currency every day, occasional pulls or energy (faction missions don't require energy btw). At first look it may scare you to see that they offer some top tier mechs and gear in the store (pricey thou), i don't personally think this affects the game too much (as you still require a lot to make those mechs viable, its like having a single copy of a hero in afk arena.. kind of worthless until you rank it up) and the game also provides a few avenues to get high rarity mechs in game outside RNG (pvp store, faction store, guild store, synthesis lab, etc). Overall the prices are competitive and offer plenty of small priced but valuable items for dolphins and small spenders.
Conclusion:
The more i play it the more i enjoy it. As the gameplay opens up most of my initial concerns were addressed. It does lack a bit of guidance and information on its systems forcing you to kind figure things out on your own or ask your guildmates. But its a new game with little outside information available (no guides, wiki or sub reddit) that deserves quite a bit more attention. Especially considering there isn't anything like it out there, and it does an amazing job recreating that mech commander feel.
4+ stars, definitely recommend
This game had several different versions that I played. This one is the worst.
