Despite policing the region, he was forced to live one town over in the lower-middle class suburb of Harrisburg. Harrisburg was never voted one of the best small towns in America. Harrisburg didn’t have a pie shoppe or a yacht club.

But Harrisburg was what Sheriff Berry could afford on his government salary.

When the blackouts hit Michigan, Berry and his men delivered generators and fuel to local schools and hospitals. When supermarket shelves were empty, Sheriff Berry organized out-of-work truck drivers to haul sundries from neighboring states. And when the Carlsbad girl was found in that car in the Lake,

Sheriff Berry was the one who tracked her killer and brought him to justice. Sheriff Berry was considered a hero.

Until he was tasked with taking down a new gang called “The New State”.

The New State was a growing protest movement that had escalated into a campaign of calculated arson. The more over-priced housing developments that the New State burned, the more popular the movement became. Fearing their beautiful town would be burnt to ashes, the residents called upon Sheriff Berry and his men to protect them.

Berry’s duty was to serve and protect; he couldn’t allow rampant criminality. And yet the New State was made up of his neighbors. Angry blue-collar workers just like him. Sanitation workers and underpaid teachers and truck-stop waitresses, all of them angry at how their city was becoming a rat-infested hellscape while the wealthy stood by and did nothing.

Berry was called in to arrest a group of arsonists – they had started a fire at a construction site in Troi. Imagine his surprise when he discovered one of the arsonists was his own teenage daughter, Zoe.

Berry handcuffed his daughter. Put her in a squad car. But the act cut to Berry’s core. Because deep down, he didn’t blame his daughter for being angry.

He was angry too.

He was angry that the world was falling apart and he and his family didn’t have a future.

So he uncuffed his daughter. Let her free. And then he handed her a lit Molotov.
