Lunar New Year is not exclusive to China. Countries like Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and many others have celebrated this festival for centuries, each with their own unique customs, foods, and traditions. In Vietnam, we call it Tết Nguyên Đán (Tết), and it is the most significant holiday of the year, marked by family reunions, ancestral worship, festive foods like bánh chưng, and wishes of prosperity for the new year. South Koreans celebrate Seollal, where they honor ancestors and play traditional games. These are not “Chinese traditions”—they are part of each country’s cultural heritage.
When companies insist on branding it as “Chinese New Year,” you erase these rich traditions and contribute to a harmful misconception that Chinese culture is the only one that matters. This is cultural erasure, and it needs to stop. If you truly respect the communities that celebrate this holiday, then use the correct term: Lunar New Year (or simply acknowledge each country’s distinct name for it)
