GAMEPLAY OVERVIEW
Shadow of the Depth is a roguelike set action game that features exploring the hidden dungeons and eliminating the monsters in the dark. It is a single-player game where you begin with Arthur, the default character. The dungeons have chapters.
Each chapter has three normal stages, and the last one is the Boss stage, where you engage in the boss battles. The game has a chapter-based progression system with immersive dark visuals and controls. The main gameplay involves moving forward in the dungeon and discovering the unlocked areas on the map.
As you move ahead, monsters will start attacking you as they see you. You need to kill all the monsters in that stage before your HP dies out. In the next stage, your life will be renewed as full. In between the combat, you’ll pick up and use items that include HP, Skill Book, and Weapons or even sell them.
There are mainly two game modes: Classic and Intense. The classic mode is the default game mode, where you go through full levels. At the same time, the intense mode is where you skip the first stage of each chapter but receive drops of a similar number to the Classic mode. Each mode will have six difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Advanced, Hard, Expert, and Nightmare.
The Easy and Normal levels have been available to play since the beginning. The other ones unlock after completing the previous difficulty level. For combat, you’ll have a joystick on the left for movement. On the right-hand side, you’ll have buttons to perform tasks that include Evade, Attack, Combo, Special Skill, Ultimate Skill, Passive Skill, and more.
The Evade button is to dodge attacks from enemies. The Attack button unleashes the normal attack of your character. There are separate controls for some characters to perform combo attacks as well. The skill buttons appear as you pick them up during your fight in the dungeon.
SHADOW OF THE DEPTH Basically
Dungeon
The Dungeon is the area where your character faces the monsters. As you move forward in the dungeon, you’ll discover more dark and hidden areas within. There are teleportation portals that help you to teleport to other locations in the dungeon. The Wheel of Fortune allows you to choose one item out of the three. There are three Rest Spots in the dungeon where you can pause your battle and rest for a while. They are Weapon Statue, Rune Statue, and Recovery Statue. You can also buy items with coins in the dungeon. There are seal stones at certain level exits, and attacking them summons the monsters. You must defeat the monsters to move to the next level.
CHARACTERS
The Characters can be accessed from the diamond icon on the top right of the start screen. You can see the characters that haven’t been unlocked apart from the default character, Arthur. As of now, the game has five characters:
• Arthur
• Ginzo
• Arya
• Phyllis
• Stephanie
All these characters have basic info about them that shares their background and description. Upon clicking on a particular character, you can view their abilities like Damage, Agility, Range, and Survival capacity. The weapon they primarily carry will also be visible above these attributes. On the right-hand side, you can see the primary, ultimate, and special skills of the characters.
SKILLS
There are three types of skills that each character in the game carries, namely, Special Skill, Primary Skill, and Ultimate Skill. The Special skills come in various types, including blocking, countering, altering attack actions, replenishing MP, and more. You can cast the Primary skills at the cost of some mana. Also, you can equip different weapons to change Primary Skills. You gain Ultimate energy upon hitting enemies. When the energy gauge is full, you can unleash the Ultimate skill by pressing on the Ultimate Skill Button.
TALENT
Talents are extra abilities that you can gain from the Talent section in the Preparation panel. These can include talents like Support, acquiring more combos, reroll skill books, Focus Choice, attributes increase, and more. You can unlock and upgrade these Talents using the Talent Points. You’ll achieve the Talent Points upon leveling up in the game. You can also choose to toggle them on or off according to your preference.
RUNE
Runes are nothing but enhancements that add up to your character in the form of new abilities or buffs. There are three shapes of Runes, i.e. Triangle, Hexagon, and Rectangle. The Runes can be equipped or replaced from the Preparation Panel.
Other than the shapes, the Runes offer various characteristics like Flame, Frost, Lightning, etc. Some of the Runes include Revelation, Crit Boost, Mob Killer, Magic Ward, and more. You can get these runes by leveling up, picking them up during a session, and purchasing them at the Rune Statue.
MAP
You can track your position via the Map in the game. The map resides in the top-right corner of the screen while you’re in the dungeon. To resize or hide the mini-map, you can use the Toggle Mini-Map Button.
However, you can only view the areas your character has explored until then in the dungeon. Also, when the portals are present in explored areas, you can teleport to the required location directly from the map.

Final Thoughts
I really enjoy Shadow of the Depth, even if it sometimes frustrating. It not a game for everyone, but if you like mystery, horror, and challenging gameplay, then you should try it. The dark world, creepy sounds, and deep story make it feel special.
If you like games that make you think, feel scared, and slowly discover secrets, this is a great game. But if you like fast action and easy gameplay, maybe it not for you.
