Batman: Batman: The Enemy Within, which is the follow-up to Batman: The Telltale Series, is even heavier and triggers deeper, and even more intense emotions in the hero Bruce Wayne/Batman. For the second time running, Telltale Games presents a magnificent drama in which the player is the main decision maker: the game’s plot is influenced decisively by the user’s decisions, but this time the consequences go beyond the world of video games.
The story line of the game focuses on Bruce’s love-hate relationship with John Doe, the man who evolves into the Joker. Namely, what makes The Enemy Within differ from most can be seen how the show treats this change. John : Depending on the choices made by the player, he can turn into an ally in the fight against gangsters or become an enemy and a true follower of Joker. It forms one of the most captivating narratives of character development involved in the recent counterparts of Batman narratives.
The themes of trust and deceit and light and dark are knit closely into the fable; they are both themes Bruce must come to terms between being a Batman and an undercover crony of villains. The psychological stakes are raised to the roof, and all the decisions of Bruce Wayne and his surrounding seem to always be on the edge of consequences in Gotham.
In terms of visuals, the game returns to this rather unique, comic-book inspired aesthetic that the first series introduced and further enhances the atmosphere of gothic noir that is Gotham City. All the action sequences are based on q TE and although not as involved as combat games are usually, the situations add a nice complexity level.
However, some of the same problems, that has been noticed earlier in the game, are encountered. There are some technical issues which are seen in form of momentary frame drops and other related glitches. Nevertheless, the extent of the storytelling and the gravity of the stakes blow these downsides out of the water.
Pros and cons
✅Cons:
✅High level of depth, emotional storytelling: This game brings with it a touching, engaging narrative which explores Bruce Wayne's minds and how he sees John Doe-the joker- in an intense relationship.
✅Choices from Players: Such choices would become memorable. They will also completely influence the storytelling process and thus create a unique blend shaping the replaying factor of the game.
✅New Evolution for the Joker: Unlike in the tradition Batman story, players will be responsible for John Doe's evolution that will allow a new, unpredictability in the aspect for the joker.
✅Hit a new peak in stunning comic book aesthetics: Every inch of the game retains that signature noir, comic-book-style visuals, which help completely set the stage in Gotham's dark and moody atmosphere.
✅Very Captivating QTE Combat: Quick Time Events boost the cinematic flair and variety, although technically not as mechanically deep as the usual action game.
❌Cons:
❌Technical Glitches: In some occasions experiences of frame drops plus seizes were found interrupting the immersion experience; this has also been happening in all Telltale games.
❌Very Shallow Gaming Depth: The game is basically another narrative interactive experience rather than the true action game. Therefore, it applies to those that want in-depth combat.
❌Some Pacing Problems: Certain sections may feel unbearably slow, particularly for players who do not prefer dialogue-heavy storytelling.
❌Paths of the Storyline Fixed: Some real freedom would have been much better with player influence, though many elements of the storyline seemed predetermined even with choices in many story points.
Overall, Batman: The Enemy Within is even better, it provides a great, an emotional read, focusing on Bruce Wayne and his growing psychological battle with the city’s greatest enemies.
