Ocean Keeper: Dome Survival by RetroStyle Games UA is a roguelike game that takes the players to the deep-sea environment and task them with fending off enemies while defending a central dome. Despite being a mix of tower defense, survival and action, the game at some point, has some drawbacks which are the following.
The game’s premise is straightforward: You are on the mission to defend your dome from sea creatures while searching for the valuable resources in the sea depths. The graphic design is good and the game features bright colors and smooth graphics half of which are concerned with the water environment in the game. The corals illuminate and various sea creatures, accompanied with the visual effects are some of the best parts brought pre lighted with extra touches of polish that can be seen in the indie designed games.
But although graphics and the game’s concept are promising, the actual gameplay after a few hours can be considered monotonous. That’s why players get trapped in the same loop over and over again: defend, gather resources, improve, and defend again. The type of the enemies encountered does not vary a lot and as the game does not really evolve from a gameplay perspective it is hard to remain really captivated for a long time. Despite the fact that all roguelike games fundamentally rely on repetition, Ocean Keeper still doesn’t possess enough depth and content to fully enthral its players.
Also, the control mechanics feel somewhat frustrating; especially when faced with hordes of enemies on higher levels. Speed may not be very smooth, and targeting can sometimes be jerky, which proves to be annoying when one needs to make rapid action. Such control issues renders some part of the game unnecessarily hard and in the long run reduces the fun that is supposed to be embraced at every level of the game.
Pros and cons
✅Pros:
✅An Outstanding Ocean Environment: While it adds an unusual twist to traditional roguelike game design, the deep ocean surrounding and vivid corals glowing in color is by itself a refreshing bathroom underlining the beauty in visuals.
✅Visually pleasing: Everything is smooth and polished when it comes to graphics, with at its best animated sea creatures and light effects that really would showcase what level an indie might desire to achieve.
✅It Is Really Simple: The basic loop of gameplay - protect the dome and collect resources - is keeping things pretty simple enough for everyone, making it accessible for those who are really casual gamers.
✅Genre Mash-Up: A combination of roguelike, tower defense, and action-all packed together would make the most interesting mix not only for themselves but most especially for lovers of the survival challenges.
❌Cons:
❌Repetitive gameplay loop: As there isn't enough challenge or depth within the game, a rather simple example of defending and gathering upgrades can become quite dull after having done it again and again.
❌Reduced Variety in Enemies: The same kind of sea creatures again and again makes a monotonous understanding of the game's aspect over a longer period.
❌Lack in Progression: This is just one of those games that are roguelike but lacks actual mechanics or unlocks that keep the player hanging.
❌Clunky Controls: With the stiff and often unresponsive controls during the encounters that are usually fast-paced, players find it difficult to comprehend.
In conclusion, Ocean Keeper: I believe that Dome Survival has stable base with its ocean premise and roguelite mechanics but there should be more changes enemies and the features in the game to keep the players engaged. Sometime with little modification and enhancement, it can turn into something more lethally engaging.
