I’m working on a little cat lane strategy game called Claws of Power, and recently I finished a new unit I’m pretty happy with: the samurai cat Akagoro. He costs 7 dried fish, so most of the time he’s just standing in the hand looking lazy with his straw hat on while you save up. The idea is that he’s one of those “okay, now it’s worth spending everything” kind of units. His first attack is the fun part: he pauses for a moment, then flash-dashes forward and does a quick iai-style slash. That opening hit usually closes the gap and deletes one target in one go. After that he settles into a more normal melee rhythm, but that first cut is meant to feel like a classic single clean samurai strike. One gif I recorded is just a simple 1v1 test, the other is Akagoro in an actual stage after you unlock him, so you can see how he behaves in a real wave. One of the fun parts of making my own game is that sometimes I can just take a character vibe I really like and turn it into a cat. So this time I made a new unit for Claws of Power called Wade. Dark outfit, glowing red blade, very obvious “space villain” energy. He’s not just there for looks, though. In battle he can use the red blade to block incoming ranged attacks, which makes him really funny to watch against archers and gunners. He also has a pull / gravity-like skill that drags enemies from farther away right into melee range, so once they get close, he can start bullying them properly. The whole thing is still hand-drawn frame by frame, and these GIFs are from my current test build. I’m still tuning him, but he’s already one of those units that feels very satisfying when everything lines up. I’m making a small indie game called Claws of Power. A big part of the starting point for this game was those old lane-push browser games, especially Age of War. I always thought that kind of gameplay was weirdly addictive, and also had more room to be explored than most games ever did with it. So I ended up making my own version of that feeling — but with cats. At the core, it’s still a single-lane push game: you spend dried fish to summon units, they walk forward automatically, fight on the lane, and whoever destroys the enemy base first wins. But I’ve been trying to build more around that loop: different cat skills, items, equipment, timing, positioning, and more ways to actually make decisions instead of just spamming units. I still don’t know the perfect genre name for this kind of game. It’s a bit lane strategy, a bit tower defense, a bit RTS, and a bit chaotic auto-battle nonsense. Whatever the label is, this is basically my attempt to take that old Age of War style and push it in my own direction. It’s a single-lane, card-based strategy game where you spend dried fish to summon cats, they walk forward, and whoever destroys the enemy base first wins. On the surface it’s very simple, but a lot of the fun comes from timing, cost management, and how you mix units and items. A few cats I personally use a lot: Masashi (ninja cat) – when he meets the first enemy, he teleports behind them and keeps walking. He’s great for slipping past the frontline and going straight for the backline or even the base.
