I’m working on a small cat lane-strategy game called Claws of Power, and this unit is based on a Chinese street cat I see a lot in real life. In game it can open with a long-range flying kick, then swap to quick punches once it gets in your face, so it plays somewhere between a ranged and melee fighter. Sometimes it looks very smart, sometimes it just yeets itself into danger—but that’s also why I like it. I’m making a small indie game called Claws of Power. A big part of the starting point for this game was those old lane-push browser games, especially Age of War. I always thought that kind of gameplay was weirdly addictive, and also had more room to be explored than most games ever did with it. So I ended up making my own version of that feeling — but with cats. At the core, it’s still a single-lane push game: you spend dried fish to summon units, they walk forward automatically, fight on the lane, and whoever destroys the enemy base first wins. But I’ve been trying to build more around that loop: different cat skills, items, equipment, timing, positioning, and more ways to actually make decisions instead of just spamming units. I still don’t know the perfect genre name for this kind of game. It’s a bit lane strategy, a bit tower defense, a bit RTS, and a bit chaotic auto-battle nonsense. Whatever the label is, this is basically my attempt to take that old Age of War style and push it in my own direction. I’ve been working on a new unit for my cat lane strategy game Claws of Power – a grab-and-smash mech cat – and I wanted to share some of my test footage. The boss appears out of a swarm of bats, then walks forward with the wave, throwing out black energy orbs and lightning that can pretty much erase your frontline if your timing is bad. On my side it’s mainly the Gatling muscle cat plus Nuba (the blue tiger cat) trying to clean up the lane and slowly push toward him. The other gif is just a little interaction I really like: a tiny knight cat jumps onto a big tank cat and rides along, stabbing away while the big one eats all the damage in front. I’ve been testing a new unit in Claws of Power called Aosha. He’s basically an assassin cat: blue scarf, dual blades, always moving like he’s about to cause trouble. The idea for him actually came from a player, so this one is kind of a custom character brought into the game. One balance problem in earlier versions was that ranged units were getting a bit too comfortable, so I wanted something that could punish them directly instead of just trying to out-stat them. Aosha’s normal attacks have a chance to trigger a quick extra combo. But the more important part is his special trait: if he gets hit by a ranged projectile, he instantly blinks behind that ranged unit, does a guaranteed combo, and then teleports back to where he was before. So against archers and gunners he’s… not very polite. The GIFs I’m posting are from my latest test build. I’m still tuning him, but he’s already one of those units that feels very satisfying when the matchup is right.
