When it comes to horror something about the '80s just hits harder. The look, the music, the feel—the 1980s is just the perfect era for creepy stuff. Developer LCB Game Studio seems to have recognized that, which is why its next game, Bahnsen Knights, is both set in 1986 and looks like a PC game that could have been released right around that same time. Very few RPGs manage to capture the sense of whimsy and adventure of Super Mario RPG, so when one comes along, we take notice. That's why we couldn't look away when we saw the absolutely adorable and fun-looking Born of Bread. This RPG puts players into the shoes of Loaf, a "flour golem" who must journey the world and make new friends while solving a perplexing mystery. Like Super Mario RPG, Born of Bread's combat system is technically turn-based, but different moves allow players to do extra damage by completing timing-based challenges. So it requires a little more attention than the average turn-based RPG, where you might just tap "attack" over and over.

Pros: I really enjoy playing this game, all the game modes are so fun to play and the new event is exciting. Cons: I don't really have a con the game is very fun in my opinion. Overall: Very very fun game. I love it and highly recommend. Fortnight is one of the most influential games in history, and it is almost singularly responsible for battle passes that “pay for themselves”, free seasonal content updates, and cross-platform multiplayer becoming industry norms.

Back in our day we had to turn to the Dungeon Keeper games when we wanted to torture good guys and corrupt fantasy lands. But since EA hasn't done anything with that franchise in ages, publisher Kalypso Media and developer Realmforge Studios have picked up the slack with the Dungeons series. The latest entry, Dungeons 4, is almost here, and it's looking like a devilishly good time. With a firmly goofy tone, the game will have players building a dungeon fit to keep the various orcs, goblins, and other evil denizens happy and healthy. But they'll need to contend with raiding parties from above and below, as humans, elves, and dwarves attempt to invade the dungeon and steal the precious gold and gems within.

From Hollow Knight to Blasphemous 2 to, well, most of the Metroid and Castlevania games of the last twenty years, we've played and adored Metroidvanias for a long time now. But for as many of these adventure/exploration-heavy platformers as we've played, we've never seen one that looks quite like Worldless. This upcoming Metroidvania from Spanish game developer Noname Studios uses stark colors and an abstract art style to really stand out from the pack. That's not the only way that it's different, though. In addition to the usual exploration and ability unlocking of this style of game, it uses a clever combat system that mixes turn-based and real-time action.

Helskate is a hack-and-slash roguelike that also happens to be a skateboarding game, and it just hit early access. It’s a ton of fun to shift between monster slaying and skateboarding tricks, but I ran into several issues during my playtime. If you pick it up now, you’ll probably have a good time, but I suspect it’ll be much better once it’s had more time in the oven.
