We all know that Ash's Pikachu has never evolved into Raichu, but why? Regarding this question, the official answer has been given twice through the animation.
The first time was when Ash challenged the Vermilion City Gym Leader's Raichu with his Pikachu. Pikachu was badly injured and sent to the hospital. Nurse Joy gave Ash a Thunder Stone to help Pikachu evolve, but Ash decided to let Pikachu make the decision on its own. In the end, Pikachu chose to prove itself in its own way by not evolving and defeated Raichu.
