Tom and Jerry: Chase Review—Chasing the Mice of Nostalgia

The weekdays passed in a whirl of activity as we braced ourselves for the possibility of some wintry conditions❄️.

When Saturday came, I found myself lying on the sofa with one hand tucked under my head, absently giving my newest furry companion a gentle rub under its chin.

Before I knew it, the weekends flew by so quickly, making way for the beginning of a brand new week.

As they say, every new day brings new challenges. Hence, I am somehow faced with a tiny issue—One of my housemates seems to be an overly passionate fan of the Tom & Jerry franchise (Much to my dismay). Well, I mean, I’d watch it when I was younger, but not anymore.

After much persuasion, it seems we have all been signed up for some Tom & Jerry marathon that night (Lord bless me). To my astonishment, it’s nothing like I’d thought it’d be.

Officially licenced by Warner Bros, Netease’s Tom & Jerry: Chase (TJC) hails itself as an enthralling concoction of an excellent homage to the classic 90s cartoon series and the literal game of 🐈 and 🐁 in Identity V.

After several rounds of the cat and mice chase, I found that TJC is a pretty polished side-scrolling platformer. Arguably one of the most loved animated comedies ever, the game does indeed bring back childhood nostalgia as scenes of my younger self watching the cartoon on an old flat screen telly kept appearing before my eyes.

As you progress with the game, you will find the asymmetrical multiplayer aspect comes into play. What that means is that for each 4v1 match, you’ll be provided with an option—Yes, you guessed it!—You’ll be getting the chance to become one of your favourite characters from the classics. Don’t you sense thrashing waves of excitement washing over you right now?

Much unlike the situation I’ve encountered in Identity V, I have had no issues obtaining the Tom role. Bewildered, I simply can’t figure out why I’m unable to find a comrade who appreciates setting the pace of the chase and striking fear within the mice (Is it just me, myself and I?).

If I happen to acquire the Jerry role, I always have to count my blessings since my mates have always been (for some unknown reason) fighting over them. Sigh... I’d have to cooperate with my 3 other mates to steal all his cheese (fast) and break the wall to escape. Most importantly, you’ll have to evade Tom at all costs, or at least die trying (if you don’t want to incur the wrath of your folks).Much like Dota 2, an extensive new player experience will be available in TJC to guide any potential newcomers when they join. It consists of a mixture of tutorial-like scenarios for specific aspects of the game, how-tos on certain game features, and different tasks to help you learn the ins and outs. For one, I really thought it was quite a nice touch to get you ahead for what’s to come.

Anyway, if you’re like my housemate, who’s an aficionado of the eternally warring pair as a kid (or even now), you’ll definitely love this game. So, why don’t you join me here to pique your curiosity and for some old times sake, aye?
