One of the best things about gaming is that there’s never a lack of new ideas. But one of the other best things about gaming? We’re also never lacking for sequels!
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting a satisfying follow-up to a game you adored. With God of War Ragnarok about to take over out PlayStations next week, we thought we’d take a look at that game along with four other upcoming sequels that we can’t wait to get our hands on.
God of War Ragnarok (PS4, PS5)
Release date: Nov. 9, 2022
If you’re anything like me, just that word is enough to evoke very positive memories of the masterpiece epic that was 2018’s God of War. This soft reboot of Sony’s brutal action franchise found Greek god Kratos displaced to the lands of the Norse deities and struggling to embrace a new role as a father. It also ended on a series of powerful cliffhangers, and I cannot wait to see where Kratos and his boy Atreus go this time.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf (PC, PS4, XBS/X)
Release Date: TBA
2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition was a high point for BioWare’s popular fantasy RPG series, broadening the scope and showing off more of the world than ever before. It’s been a long, loooong wait for a follow-up, but Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the fourth mainline game in the franchise, is getting closer.
Just last week, BioWare announced in a blog post that Dreadwolf has completed its alpha milestone, which means it is now playable from start to finish. The developer still hasn’t set a release date (or even a timeframe), so we could still be waiting a while, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dreadwolf show up in late 2023 or early 2024. Here’s hoping!
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)
Release date: Winter 2023
The first part of Square Enix’s ambitious Final Fantasy VII Remake project launched in 2020 and shocked the world by actually delivering a really great game that introduced a fun new combat system and a lot of surprise twists to the story of the beloved original Final Fantasy VII. Next year, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will continue that story, serving as the middle entry in what has now been revealed to be a trilogy.
And if you really can’t wait for more adventures in the world of Cloud and friends, good news: Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII Reunion will arrive in just a month, serving as a remake of the previously PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy VII prequel.
Hollow Knight: Silksong (NS, PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, XBS/X)
Release date: 2023
Metroidvanias—that is, games that use the style of usually 2D map exploration and gaining skills to be able to explore more, as popularized in the Metroid and Castlevania games—are big business among indie devs. But no one has ever done the formula justice quite as well as 2017’s Hollow Knight. It’s not only one of our favorite Metroidvanias, but one of our favorite games ever, period. So you better believe we can’t wait to lose ourselves in this gorgeously animated world once more when Hollow Knight: Silksong releases next year.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (NS)
Release date: May 12, 2023
It’s no exaggeration to say that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a game changer when it launched alongside the Nintendo Switch hardware in 2017. It completely reimagined what a Zelda game could be and reminded gamers that open-world games don’t have to be full of bland, repetitive content. This long-awaited sequel has big shoes to fill, but from the little we’ve seen thus far, it looks similarly beautiful and packed full of another massive world to explore. Yes, please.
💬 You’ve seen what we’ll be eagerly looking forward to in 2023 and beyond. Now it’s your turn! Did we miss any upcoming sequels that you can’t wait to play? Let us know in the comments.
hope there is also a triple-A game like this on Mobile.
