We all remember the scandals around the release of this game, being ‘pay to win’ with ‘held items’ at the forefront of the complaints. In reality, that issue never existed in the first place in my mind and even less now. Items can be levelled up to 30 and a Pokémon can hold 3 at a time. Whilst the difference between a lvl 1 and lvl 30 item may be significant, once items reach lvl 20 the power increase becomes minute, and 3 lvl 20 items is absolutely achievable after just playing the game a little. Furthermore, after all of those complaints, players are now able to get 3 of their items to lvl 30 for free!
This isn’t all to say that the game is particularly generous. Their overall business tactics become shadier by the minute from what I’ve seen ranging between making new Pokémon more expensive than older ones and locking some behind a pay wall for the first week, to early game cheap offers to reel you in to spending more later. A video by Mrwhosetheboss displays some of these issues and, although it misses the mark quite significantly at certain parts (debunked in a video by spragels), it still shows the greed of the company in some regards.
So, maybe the game is a little greedy, although not as much as some people may perceive it to be. But, is the core gameplay good? To put it simply, yes. This was the first MOBA I played and it was a great introduction into the genre with shorter 10 minute battles and less complicated controls than your classic LoL or Dota. Now, fans of these games may complain over the lack of gameplay depth and choice in comparison, but I think that this game hits the nail on the head by accessing new players through the Pokémon IP due to easier gameplay, whilst still bringing players from MOBAs as I believe the level of detail is still significant enough. Don’t worry though, this isn’t just a game for the faint of heart, for those of you who are more competitive the game still takes a lot of skill at higher levels and features it’s own E-sport.
Sorry if this was a bit long but I hope it helped your understanding of the game. To conclude, whereas greed is certainly prevalent in parts of the game. The gameplay is still wonderful and does a great job of combining your favourite Pokémon with some skill based MOBA action.
For those of you wondering, don’t worry, the MVP function is, in fact, very broken.
