I typically love old school shmups, but I don’t love Striker Girls 1945. While it looks nice with its very much en vogue anime aesthetic, it doesn’t play nice and when it comes down to it that’s the most important thing in a video game, right?
I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again anyway because I like the sound of my own voice: Touch controls are not the optimal way to play a game like this. I can’t tell you how utterly frustrated I become when my own damn finger is blocking my view of the enemies and the bullets they are firing at me. You need a joystick or, at the very least, a control pad to make a shoot ‘em up really fly and that’s not an option in Striker Girls 1945, unfortunately.
On top of that, your plane auto-fires and is so underpowered and slow at the outset that I thought my device was broken or experiencing some sort of technical issues. It’s clear that the developers at Fisher King Games want me to pay for plane upgrades from the word “go,” and I’m just not having that pay-to-win nonsense.
Add in the standard mobile game annoyances (ads, videos, loot boxes, etc.) and, yeah, I was ready to move on from Striker Girls 1945 pretty quickly. Only play it if you enjoy frustration and getting nickel-and-dimed at every turn.
