I don’t particularly like playing Sqroma. I mean, I don’t hate it and I’m not saying people shouldn’t play it, but it’s not a game I’d personally relish for hours and hours. After playing multiple puzzle games these past few weeks, Sqroma falls pretty short of what I’d expect in one and didn’t keep me entertained long enough to complete the game.
Sqroma is a colorful puzzle game where I needed to progress through different levels and figure out how to escape each one. There’s only one objective: reach the exit alive. Getting there, though, well that’s the challenging part. Each puzzling level differs uniquely and becomes more difficult to crack farther into the game. I needed to figure out how to get from the starting point as a cube to the exit without getting hit by spikes and arrows. To do this, I had to find paint and coat myself with different colors so that I’d become immune to particular projectiles. For example, if I wanted to dodge red arrows, I needed to find red paint. The same goes for any other color.
The puzzles definitely challenged me a little, but not enough to keep me bewildered for longer than a few minutes. Most of the time, I had no trouble progressing through the game, which felt pretty breezy and easy at first, but later gameplay started to bore me. I desperately wanted a challenge while playing Sqroma, and although the game provided that fairly occasionally, it wasn’t enough to satiate the hunger I had for much harder puzzles. I mean, after playing games like Another Shadow and Boxville, the puzzles in Sqroma were alright. Not too hard, not too easy. Predictable.
Puzzles aside, I definitely would’ve enjoyed Sqroma much more as a casual game if it wasn’t for the pesky ads that popped up forcibly and repeatedly while playing. I wanted to pull my hair out when one would pop up. I had to sit through thirty seconds of grueling torture every time one did and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Although I could’ve purchased a microtransaction to possibly rid these ads (it’s not apparent in-game if it actually does remove them), I wasn’t interested in the game long enough to bother. By the seventh or ninth forced ad, I’d grown uninterested and dissuaded from playing and eventually stopped.
I do think Sqroma might be a great opportunity to relish a relatively simple puzzle title for people new to the genre or maybe for those interested in games with geometric designs and plain visuals. However, I will likely never play Sqroma again.
The game developer here! Thanks for the comment, the game shouldn't send you that much ads and I'll fix that for sure. Even if you won't play the game again, the time you took will help me and the game. About the fact it's quite easy, it's far from the hardest puzzle game, but it's like a mario game with some challenge at the endgame, but you may be bored before, understandable! Thanks again for your test.
