This is a love letter to RPGS of the past so if you don't like reading - turn back now otherwise carry on down memory lane (⌒‐⌒)
As a dedicated fan since 1995, video games play a special place in my heart and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge, thoughts, and opinions on nostalgic retro titles. These games may look dated but without them most of the games you play now may never of existed without the inspiration and you owe it to yourselves to play these historic classics.
1. Final Fantasy VII
Any gamer looking for an enjoyable game that is sure to endure in their memory would do well to pick up Final Fantasy VII because it deservingly owns a prominent place in RPG history. If you love turn based, play the original but if you are more used to recent freedom of movement combat play the remake. At least you have that choice now.
2. Chrono Cross
Featuring a storyline developed by the creator of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, Chrono Cross has been christened the “Best RPG Creation” by its development team. With multiple scenarios cast along a single story thread and many different endings, each replay can result in an entirely new adventure. In addition, a brand new battle system makes combat smooth and innovative by introducing an element field system and combo system that gives the player unparalleled flexibility in their fighting options.
3. Xenogears
A mysterious organization is turning the tides of a century-long war with ancient technology – giant combat robots known as Gears. A failed attempt to steal one of these powerful weapons places it in the unwilling hands of young Fei and his dubious allies. Now he is pursued by military governments, royal pirates, spies, the emperor, and his own forgotten past. Xenogears is a wonderful game! With the most minor of flaws, and great graphics, storyline, gameplay, and even sound, it’s definitely a winner.
4. Vagrant Story
Relive an adventurous tale rich with agents, espionage, and conspiracies. Challenge deadly monsters and villains with your steel and magic. Clear your name by uncovering a sinister plot – or perish in the attempt.
Vagrant Story’s disparate parts come together in a beautiful, cinematic experience. The game’s story is compelling and constantly urges the player to press forward, giving the game the addictive quality of the finest RPGs.
5. Grandia
Join Justin and friends on an epic journey through a captivating storyline, providing over 80 hours of intensive gameplay. With vast polygonal worlds to explore an extensive character interaction, Grandia features innovative gameplay with a unique magic combination and character development system and a choice of two battle modes; classic turn-based or automatic.
Grandia is every bit as worthwhile as Final Fantasy VIII, just in different ways. While a more casual RPGer might opt for Final Fantasy VIII, as Sony’s sad ad campaign admits, Grandia is a fantastic game for anyone looking for a lighthearted, truly satisfying adventure.
6. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Return to the world of LUNAR, in the completely reworked 32-bit version of the RPG classic. Journey back to a place where dragons yet live, and magic is valued above all else. Join Alex, the young adventurer, as he begins a quest with his friends to save their land from the crushing advance of the Magic Emperor. Explore Dungeons, fight terrifying monsters, and gather information from the locals as you advance toward the explosive encounter with the Magic Emperor himself!
This game proves to be fun. Even the battles are fun. I just enjoy running around and talking to people, as it is sometimes comical, and very interesting. This game is guaranteed to be 35+ hours of fun.
7. Valkyrie Profile
The Gods are at War. You must gather the souls of fallen warriors and train them to fight at Odin’s side. From the creators of Star Ocean: The Second Story, Valkyrie Profile sets new standards for role-playing games on the PlayStation game console.
With lengthy story sequences, few save points (Sound familiar aka Dark Souls - nudge nudge), and a steep learning curve, this isn’t exactly a great on-the-go game that you can play for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. But if you’re looking for a different role-playing experience, and you don’t mind a game that takes itself very seriously, you’ll get your money’s worth from Valkyrie Profile.
8. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Welcome back to the twisted world of Persona, where nightmares become reality and reality becomes a nightmare… Over 50 hours of dark twisted gameplay, plus stunning anime cinematics that absorb you into the intriguing world of Persona! Enlist the help of the nightmarish denizens of Persona through the use of the unique ‘Contact System!
In spite of stiff competition from the plethora of excellent RPGs during its release year, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment stands out as one of the very best games of 2000. This RPG is difficult and time-consuming, so impatient gamers or those who dislike challenge may opt for an easier game. All other RPG fans, however, are strongly recommended to check it out.
9. Alundra
Plagued by strange visions, the Dreamwalker Alundra is summoned to a troubled village where great evil lies in wait. Explore huge dungeons, find deadly weapons, solve challenging puzzles and fight the cast of foul creatures out to stop you in your tracks. This vast, enthralling adventure will keep you wide awake to the very end.
If you’re a fan of Zelda, Landstalker, or other action RPGs that have hit consoles before, then Alundra should be your next stop. It’s an addictive, well-rounded game that is balanced, challenging, and, most of all, fun to play. If you’re speedy, on the quick end it’ll take around 40 or so hours to complete. If you like to take your time and really search every corner while trying to figure out every puzzle, it’ll take a lot longer. If you’re a hard-fought turn-based RPG veteran who’s not so good when it comes to button-pressing dexterity, then Alundra will take some getting used to but is worth it.
10. Suikoden
Treachery is eating like a maggot at the heart of the Scarlet Moon Empire. But is the Empire corrupt or the people just disloyal? Only you can find out. Take the role of an Imperial Guard in this epic tale of betrayal, greed, and honor as he struggles to find the truth. Head teams of fighters and magicians in battles against weird monsters then lead an army into battle against awesome opponents.
This game is easily one of the better RPGs for the Playstation. While its graphics aren’t anything great, everything else about it is wonderful. The best feature is easily the 108 characters. If you’re looking for an RPG that is for intermediate gamers and features an arsenal (literally) of deep characters, run to the shop to buy Suikoden or check out Cex or Amazon for deals.
11. Breath Of Fire IV
After centuries of war, the two lands bordering an impenetrable swampland have finally reached an armistice. Mysteriously, the noble Princess Elena disappears somewhere near the war-ravaged front lines. Distraught, her sister Nina goes in search of the Princess alone and on her journey, meets a mysterious young warrior named Ryu. Their destinies soon entwine. The next chapter in the epic tale of magic and mystery now unfolds. The fate of what lies ahead rests in your control.
Nice presentation, a sweeping storyline, deep satisfying RPG-style gameplay, and above-average gorgeous visuals and beautiful anime cinematics combine to make it a memorable game for the RPG junkie who’s already plowed through all of this year’s other excellent role-playing games. This was my favourite game growing up and I always give it an honorable mention whenever conversations about the past come up. Absolute gem in RPG history with an incredible soundtrack - just watch the opening if you want to see for yourself!
12. Dragon Warrior VII
You plan to become a humble fisherman of peaceful Estard Island, the only land in a world of ocean. But when you discover the artifacts from an ancient land, you tear the fabric of time and unveil the world that once was. Transported to past lands, you must solve their mysteries and break the spell of annihilation. Prepare for your destiny!
While other RPGs may offer up more flash and experimentation, there is a good deal to be said for tradition done right. And with a full 80 hours worth of solid and engrossing gameplay, that’s just the sort of experience Dragon Warrior VII offers up.
13. Tactics Ogre
After generations of war between the various ethnic groups, King Dogare brought peace to the land of Valeria. When the king dies Valeria is split into three different groups, each claiming the throne. You take the role of a young boy as he embarks on a quest to save the land from turmoil and assume the throne.
Tactics Ogre is, in certain respects, a dated experience. But the core of this game’s epic story and groundbreaking gameplay are timeless, emblematic reminders that the game is and forever will be a masterpiece.
14. Arc The Lad Collection
Arc the Lad I The first game in the series that really defined what a Strategy/RPG could introduce players to… The second game in the Arc series introduces Elc, a bounty hunter with a tragic past. He must join forces with Arc to stop the minions of the Dark One, whose presence was only hinted in the first game… Arc the Lad III introduces a new lead character Alec and ties up all the storylines developed in the first two games in a way that will leave diehard role-playing fans breathless.
The Arc the Lad Collection is ultimately an interesting, varied, and rewarding experience that has a tendency to sometimes get bogged down. Those who aren’t bothered by a “level or else” series of games and who are willing to give these titles the time they require will feel a definite sense of accomplishment, but those who prefer a more straightforward experience are advised to admire the collection’s handsome box from afar.
15. Wild Arms
A warrior, a princess, and a rogue cross the wastelands of Filgaia on a quest for ancient relics that may save this brave new world – a world where legends become reality. With a story that spans centuries, breathtaking 3D combat arenas and fully customizable options, Wild Arms is the role-playing adventure you’ve been waiting for.
The game’s brilliant storyline, amazingly long play time (well over 50 hours for this), and a multitude of character options make it very easy to overlook the game’s weak points. Every fan of RPG games should at least take a peek at this title.
16. The Legend Of Dragoon
A peaceful beginning. The legend was born 10,000 years ago. A violent uprising. A civilization of flying creatures enslave the human race. A bloody war. In a bid for freedom, the humans harness the spiritual forces of Dragons and triumph. Tranquility and harmony exist between all. But the past and the future are about to collide…Unveil a fantasy of Magnificence, Deception, Magical Combat, and Retribution.
Its powerful story, great cast of characters, gorgeous graphics, and one of the most inventive battle systems in a long time all work together to create an instant classic. It's an underrated gem that some fans forgot about but time keeps it shining through the ages.
17. Brave Fencer Musashi
Brave Fencer Musashi has been summoned to stop an ancient evil force, to save the kingdom and rescue the princess. Embark on a wild, comical, Action/RPG adventure in a massive 3-D world filled with platform-style action, two-fisted sword fighting, challenging puzzles, and scores of enemies whose skills Musashi can learn and use to his advantage. Locate five powerful magical scrolls to conquer the twisted Thirstquencher Empire.
Despite the light-hearted brushstrokes throughout Brave Fencer Musashi, this disc houses one of the richest and most satisfying videogames I’ve ever enjoyed.
18. Legend Of Legaia
The world of Legaia lives in terror of a deadly Mist that appeared from no-where. In a remote and tiny village lives a boy gifted with curiosity and bravery. With the help of his friends, he must reveal the secret of the mist and learn to use ancient magical powers in this astounding RPG adventure.
If you are looking for a challenge, Legend of Legaia is definitely the game for you. All the bosses can be difficult, even if you discover their weaknesses (and darn near impossible if you don’t). The storyline is also engrossing, one of the better and more unique tales to come along in a while.
19. Vandal Hearts II
Aided by the power of a sacred sword, Nirbath led the blessed. The last of its powers need, the sword shattered into a thousand pieces, each of which is said to have become the first of every weapon known to mankind.
It has flaws of its own, but it doesn’t fall into the pitfalls that frustrated many of Final Fantasy Tactics‘ players, making it well suited for both veterans and newcomers to the genre.
20. The Legend Of Mana
In ancient times, the world was saved from destruction by sealing locations and events within magical artifacts. Now, you have the chance to recreate this world as you desire by discovering artifacts, placing them, and exploring the mysteries inside.
So overall, Square presents a stunning product in Legend of Mana. Graphics, music, sound, gameplay, and extras all outshine most other games out there. All I have to say is that people looking for a central plot should rent the game instead of buying it. I do recommend it to all those Poke-crazed people out there, however, as it allows for a lot of customization and creation of not only monsters but weapons and magic as well. Check it out and enjoy.
Honorable mentions:
Those are our top picks for the best PS1 JRPGs I played as a kid into my teens. That being said, there are still plenty of recommended titles in the genre worth picking up.
Please note that this list only includes JRPGs that were officially released in English. There were some great JRPG titles that never made it outside of Japan, Especially more recent upcoming games but they never seem to be released globally with English subtitles let alone English dub which is a shame.
There is nothing more annoying that losing immersion because everything is in Japanese, Korean or Traditional Chinese in the middle of a cutscene or during gameplay. Unfortunately most of the third party translators are shit these days and don't work for android without having to pause every 5 mins.

TapTap Game of the Year 2023 #6: Final Fantasy XVI - the next step for gaming’s greatest series
I realize that headline might be a little provocative. Gaming’s greatest series? Really? Well, yes. For my money, at least, no single franchise has had a larger impact on my personal life in video games than Final Fantasy. The original game introduced me to Japanese RPGs. Final Fantasy VI taught me how much a video game story could affect me. Final Fantasy XIV is probably the best MMORPG ever made.
