Valiant Hearts: Coming Home is an World War I mobile game that had a truly amazing story and it left me wanting more and more, however the gameplay probably could have done with a little bit more polish.

Gameplay wise, Valiant Hearts: Coming Home has a pretty basic swipe mechanic for traveling or climbing up or down things, and tapping or long pressing on the screen in order to pick things up, hit objects, or to throw things as well. And while this may seem super simple, it does however, at times feel a little bit confusing. Especially with the swipe mechanic, sometimes I felt like I wasn't sure which way I was meant to swipe, and one time I did end up going through the same door several times while trying to do something else.

Other than that, the game has you try to solve simple puzzle situations, but never does it try to hold your hand. You will have to figure out everything on your own. There are no prompts, and the only tips you will see are that the item you are looking for could be highlighted slightly. But how to get that object is up to you to figure out. I have to admit I did take a while to figure out some things, while I got used to how the controls worked and what I was meant to do when you finally understand the purpose of some of the controls.

Visually this game is fantastic though. I absolutely loved the hand drawn art work, I loved how it never looks clean. The edges are drawn roughly and never perfect. But you can tell it's done in a professional way. The coloring of the art is so crisp and clean and honestly I just love everything about how this game looks. Overall I'd say that Valiant Hearts is a gorgeous game with some pretty average controls and gameplay.

Honestly I would have liked more from the gameplay, but I feel like the game is trying to focus on the story more than the actual gameplay itself. I never experienced any combat in my time playing the game, it's all about solving minor puzzles and finding the collectibles. While this game overall was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it for the most part. Yet again this is a game that is tied to a Netflix subscription.

I have a feeling that the games available on Netflix are probably all premium quality games, I have a feeling that they are on there to be played on a subscription compared to having to buy them. I personally would prefer the games to be purchased separately over having to be tied to a subscription. But if you use Netflix a lot, then this is probably not such a big deal. I highly recommend you try this game out, but make sure you have a Netflix subscription, because if you don't, well... Tough luck I'm afraid.
