Hello wobblers!
Ain’t it fun to be a wobbler and join the thrilling battles by yourself in TABS? We’ve been working on optimizing the [Unit Possession] mode for the pocket edition. Now it’s time to take a look at this mode and talk about its mobile design thoughts!
The [Unit Possession] mode is to switch from the top-down god-like perspective to the unit perspective with a simple tap, and manipulate this unit to move and attack.
In the original PC version, players press the F key to enter the Unit Possession mode, with WASD and mouse left and right buttons to control the movement and attack of the unit. Players can also flexibly toggle between the first-person and third-person view. Some units can even release special skills which are bound to the space bar on PC.
In order to bring you the same “action-packed” flavor from the original PC game, we added this unit possession view to the mobile screen and re-designed the controls of how to defend your faction on your own as a single unit.
Control a Single Unit to Combat
While in battles, there’s a button in the lower right corner of the mobile screen. By clicking it, players can enter the Unit Possession mode.
Unlike the PC version to control a unit with keyboard and mouse, in TABS Mobile, players can directly drag the left-screen joystick to control the unit's “staggering” gait, and swipe the right-screen to adjust the unit direction to always keep an eye on enemies.
At the bottom-center of the screen, we refer to the original PC UI design, showing the unit's HP bar, and players can tap the [Quit] and [Toggle FPS] buttons to cancel unit possession, or toggle between the first-person and third-person view.
Considering the frequent use of attack buttons, we removed the attack and special skill UI from the bottom of the screen, and now they’re separate circular buttons on the right side, so that players can tap to attack easily with their right hands.
Also, the cooldown for attacks and skills is designed with reference to the clockwise countdown of the PC version. Our design goal of all these interfaces is to reduce visual burdens with too many buttons on mobile which might deviate from the original minimalist UI style of TABS.
That’s all for today’s sharing about Unit Possession! Our dev team is still working on optimizing and adjusting the mobile version. If you have any suggestions or comments, don’t hesitate to join our official Discord for more discussions!
