Madness/Endless may damn well be the best horror/stealth game I've played this year. The world it introduces you to is utterly grotesque, and I love it! The creepy sound design, the pixel art, and the slingshot control scheme that's perfectly designed for mobile all blend to make this a must-play.
Starting off in a filthy rat-filled prison cell, it didn't take long for me to get into the world of Madness/Endless. Creepy prisoners gave me weird cryptic messages on how I was to proceed, and the game's mechanics were soon made clear.
In Madness/Endless, the goal is to slingshot into nightmarish creatures while avoiding being caught. I liked that I could slow down time by slingshotting twice and use that to get combos against my varied opponents that even included creepy bosses with freaking missiles!
Another awesome element was the sanity meter. A meter that went down each time I faced an opponent. As I progressed, there was a timed meter, which meant I needed to be strategic. I didn't want to rush into a room and kill anything too quickly and risk getting caught, but I didn't want to be too slow and lose my sanity. As in real life, losing my sanity meant game over.
Madness/Endless also has fun items and special moves, like turning into a ghost to avoid being hit by enemies. In terms of the creep factor, Madness/Endless is up there, and it's because of the sound design. I recommend playing this one with headphones to get the full experience.
Ultimately, Madness/Endless got my attention within the first few minutes of gameplay. It had fun and easy controls that made the game simple to learn, and the narrative structure kept me asking, what the hell is going on? This is what Horror/Stealth is all about.
