Ultra Blade is a lovely mix of Vampire Survivors-style action with much stronger RPG and roguelike elements. The result is a very compelling experience that I don't expect to drop from my phone any time soon.
As with Vampire Survivors, each of the character classes in Ultra Blade auto-attack as you move around the map and navigate through hordes of enemies. But they also come equipped with more powerful secondary attacks that unleash when you let go of the movement button, temporarily giving up control in exchange for massive, crowd-decimating special abilities.
These special attacks made for some tense risk-reward moments, where I had to choose between the safety of full character control versus the much more damaging powers that could wipe out the hordes of baddies in front of me faster. And each class comes with unique spins on this mechanic.
I've only unlocked four so far, but Ultra Blade has over a dozen different characters with their own weapons and strategies. In addition to leveling up during runs, character types level across runs as well, gaining access to new passive skills and starting from a more powerful place, which in turn allows for more progress.
If you enjoy Vampire Survivors-type games at all, it's worth jumping in to Ultra Blade sooner rather than later. In fact, I'm going to jump back in now and see if I can finally get that second map unlocked...
Appreciate the well thought out review, helps the rest of us make informed decisions. Thanks mate 👍
