Romancelvania is a game that tries to do something unique and quirky, blending the genres of Metroidvania and dating sim. The game tells the story of Drac, a lovelorn vampire who has been cursed and must defeat supernatural monsters while trying to find love on a reality dating show hosted by the Grim Reaper. Sounds like a wild ride, right?
Well, the game certainly has its moments. The sets and backdrops are beautifully designed, and the art style, which combines 2D and 3D, is sure to appeal to some players. The voice acting is also quite good, with some standout performances from the main cast. But unfortunately, the game falls short in several key areas.
The combat, for one, is not as polished as it could be. While the game tries to be a Metroidvania-style action game, the controls can feel clunky and the lack of a dodge move can be frustrating. Additionally, there are some graphic design errors that can detract from the overall experience. (But from what I saw the developers move quite swiftly and I think most of the errors and bugs will be solved in not too long)
On the dating sim side of things, the game is a bit underdeveloped. While it's certainly amusing to try to romance supernatural creatures, the dating sim aspect feels like more of an afterthought than a fully fleshed-out feature. It's a shame, as this is where the game could have really shone.
That being said, Romancelvania still manages to be an entertaining and humorous game. The game's humor and tone won't be for everyone, but those who appreciate a good dose of cheese and silliness will find something to enjoy here. And despite its flaws, the game's admirable approach to sexual elements shows that the developers weren't afraid to take some risks and do something different.
Overall, Romancelvania is a game with a lot of potential that doesn't quite live up to its promise. But for those willing to overlook its shortcomings and embrace its unique charm, it's still worth checking out. Who knows? Maybe you'll find true love in the halls of Drac's castle after all.
