Garena Free Fire's Origins
Garena Free Fire has become a sensation among mobile gamers, particularly in India. With over 500 million downloads on Google Play Store, it was one of the most downloaded games in 2019 and even won the 'Best Popular Vote Game' award. However, with the Indian government banning 59 Chinese apps due to security concerns, many wonder if other apps will face similar restrictions.
Free Fire's Development
The battle royale genre gained popularity after the success of PUBG on PC. Vietnamese game developer 111dots Studio decided to create their own battle royale game - Free Fire. After testing in September 2017 and releasing a Beta version in November 2018, the game officially launched on December 4th, 2018. It quickly gained traction, especially in Brazil and Thailand.
111dots Studio publishes the game globally, while Omens Studio handles publication in the Netherlands. In India, Brazil, Mexico, and Southeast Asia, Garena publishes the game. Garena is a Singapore-based digital service company that also partners with Riot Games for a League of Legends server. Its parent company is Sea Limited, headquartered in Singapore.

Free Fire Ban Possibility
India has banned a total of 106 Chinese apps due to concerns over user data privacy and security. However, these banned apps are all of Chinese origin; since Free Fire does not have roots in China, it is unlikely to be banned in India.
If PUBG MOBILE faces a ban soon, Garena Free Fire may become Indian gamers' go-to battle royale experience. The game offers unique character abilities and pets accompanying players throughout matches against 49 other players instead of PUBG MOBILE's 99 opponents—resulting in shorter games (about ten minutes).
