If you have watched the original Japanese version of the Pokémon anime, you may have noticed that Pikachu is actually speaking "Japanese".
Although its word phrases consist of only "pikachu", "pikapika", "pikapi", and "chu~", the voice actress, Ikue Otani, who voices Pikachu, puts a lot of effort into her performance. When delivering Pikachu's lines, she does not simply repeat these three sounds, but rather designs them to convey meaning.
Many of Pikachu's short phrases can be recognized as common Japanese phrases used in daily conversation. For example, when Ash falls or gets hit, Pikachu will come over and ask "pi~kachu?" in a tone that is identical to the Japanese phrase "daijoubu" (meaning "Are you okay?"). When Ash are gonna to do something silly and says "I've decided to do...", Pikachu will sigh or shake its head and say "pikapi…", which has the same tone as the Japanese phrase "mattaku" (often used to express frustration, meaning "Oh my…").
Let's take a look at how coooooool Pikachu is in the game~
