Diablo IV takes place in the world on the brink of disaster. A mysterious demon has made her way to the human realm, leaving behind death and destruction in her wake. Villages are hanging and burning their townspeople, priests are being executed during church services, and parents are killing their own children.
I’ve responded to this chaos in the most rational way possible: by petting and befriending every furry creature I can find.
Diablo IV doesn’t have pets, but there are stray cats and dogs scattered across most towns and settlements. The cats of Diablo IV are a little standoffish, but if you walk up to one of them and use the “Hello” emote, they’ll roll over and show you their fuzzy little bellies. Greeting a dog has an even cuter result: Your character will kneel down and give the pup a pet while it happily wags its tail.
After I started interacting with the dogs of Diablo, I realized that they were absolutely starving for affection. Once I gave a dog a few pets, it was happy to follow me all over town. I’ve even seen claims that dogs will follow you outside and straight into battle. Thankfully, all the pups I’ve petted have stayed back in town, where they’re safe from monster attacks.
I might not be able to fight alongside my furry friends in Diablo IV, but they’ve still become a key part of my in-game routine. Whenever I reach a settlement, I immediately run around the town and pet every last dog I can find. If I’m in a larger town, like Kyovashad, I also head on over to the inn so that I can say hello to the local cats. I’ve tried to shower affection on the animals I see outside town, like deer and polar bears, but unfortunately, they don’t seem very interested in pets.
I know it’s my job to hold back the forces of hell, but if you give me the choice between playing with dogs and slaughtering demons, I’ll choose the dogs every time. Why would I pick fights with the Blood Bishop or the Drowned Witch when I can cuddle a cat instead? Sure, I can summon a Hydra to keep me company while I fight, but it just isn’t the same.
This world needs a hero, but I don’t think I’m the Sorcerer for the job. Someone else can slay skeletons and beat up ghouls. There are puppies and kitties that need my attention.
