Here comes our third part, and this time we have selected five familiar faces.
1.Sandshrew/ Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica)
Just like Rhydon, Sandshrew is unfortunately inspired by a critically endangered and heavily poached creature, the Sunda Pangolin. Pangolins are fascinating mammals found in Asia and Africa, characterized by their unique, armor-like scales composed of keratin (the same material found in hair and nails) - the only mammals to possess such a feature. The resemblance between Sandshrew's tough hide and the pangolin's scales is evident.
Tragically, Sunda Pangolins are hunted for their skin, scales, and meat, which are sought after for both fashion and traditional medicinal purposes.
2.Zubat/ Vampire bat (Desmodontinae family)
Zubat is undoubtedly a bat, and with its prominent fangs, it bears a striking resemblance to the most infamous member of the group, the vampire bat. Vampire bats inhabit Central and South America, and as their name implies, they feed on the blood of other animals, occasionally even humans!
Although this may sound eerie, they don't actually suck blood through their fangs, and if bitten, there's no risk of transforming into one. What they do is locate a warm spot on a resting animal, create a small incision, and use their tiny tongues to lap up the blood!
3.Tauros/ European Bison (Bison bonasus)
Pokémon Tauros bears a striking resemblance to its real-life counterpart, the European Bison, except for the notable exception of its three tails. European Bison, also known as buffalo, are one of two bison species, the other being the American Bison.
These magnificent creatures hold the title of being the heaviest and largest land mammal in Europe, weighing an impressive 1000 kg (just shy of a ton of bison!). Unfortunately, they were hunted to extinction in the wild during the early 20th century. However, thanks to captive breeding and reintroduction programs, including efforts in Kent, UK, they are now making a remarkable comeback.
4.Corsola/precious coral (Corallium genus)
It's evident to see the striking similarity between this Pokémon and the creature it draws inspiration from, the vibrantly colored and intricately branched pink-red precious coral. However, unlike the Pokémon, which possesses its own cheerful countenance, corals are not solitary organisms. The "coral" we observe is, in fact, a colony comprised of genetically identical individual coral polyps.
Every one of these polyps is a minuscule animal, but they are interconnected and reliant on one another for survival. Together, they can construct immense structures; for instance, precious coral can reach heights of up to one meter.
5.Relicanth / Coelacanth
Relicanth is based on an incredibly captivating creature, an elusive deep-sea fish known as the Coelacanth. Coelacanths are often referred to as "living fossils." This is because, until relatively recently, they were believed to have become extinct, just like the dinosaurs, and were known only from fossils.
Fossils of these fish, dating back an astonishing 410 million years, had been discovered, giving no indication that they were still alive. However, a surprising revelation occurred in 1939, a staggering 66 million years after their presumed extinction, when a living specimen was found alongside a fisherman's catch. A group like this, which seemingly disappears from the fossil record only to resurface virtually unchanged, is referred to as a Lazarus taxon.
