Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a super nostalgic game for me as I remember playing the original game on my friends console as a kid, and also playing the gameboy version as well.
So to see this series reappear was a great nostalgic trip for me. The gameplay is a lot of fun, with it's fast paced combat system and hard hitting combos. You can play this on your own, or with a friend and each player can control 2 characters in the game. You do this by a type of tagging system where you swap between the two playable characters as often as you like.
You can choose your primary character but the secondary character cannot be swapped. The available characters to choose from have a nice variety of different play styles, from martial arts to even weapons. I found I preferred the girls gun as it was easier to take down enemies from afar.
You can also pick up the weapons that are dropped by the enemies, as well as break containers for money and sometimes food items to replenish your health. As you play the game, you earn money from various things, like breaking items, and defeating enemies and bosses.
As you accumulate this money, you can use it to upgrade your attacks or even buy revivals for your team. This is an interesting mechanic, and it's nice to see that it's all earned in game by just playing the game.
The visuals of Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is fantastic. The attention to the retro style details are spot on. I absolutely love all the retro pixel art and how the characters look. The character designs in both the character creator as well as the in game models are very detailed and look awesome. And the attention to detail in the overall environment is impressive too.
Honestly this looks like a great modern, yet retro revisit to a well loved game title that I was a big fan of in my youth. The audio is great as well. With it's super appropriate music that makes me think of the 80's and early 90's to the overall sound effects from combat. The impacts are punchy and everything sounds like it belongs.
There is no poor sound effects or combat effects in this game. Everything definitely sounds like it belongs and is in the right place. Overall I'd say that Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is an amazing revival of a series that I personally hadn't seen in a while.
The visuals and gameplay are stunning and a lot of fun. I highly recommend anyone who loves these types of games to get it when you can. This can be found on all consoles and on PC.
