The gameplay is fairly consistent throughout the game, focusing on basic running, jumping, shooting, and bayoneting an endless array of soldiers, with the occasional tank emplacement and helicopter thrown in. The only real gameplay variation comes in a couple of vehicle sequences where your soldier has the opportunity to do the exact same thing as he has been doing--only in a fully articulated one-man tank or a small fighter plane.
When "Metal Slug" begins, the Rebels infiltrate the Regular Army's top-secret weapons research facility and work on prototypes for a new series of tanks, inflicting even more devastating blows on the Regular Army.
Given the design's timeless appeal (and solid control), the only thing that might deter you from investing in this classic right away is that it's finally been remade in an anthology collection or at a cheaper price point.
