Before the 26th even arrived, gamers already received an unexpected gift. Setting the bar for indie games, the author of Baba Is You, Arvi Teikari uploaded a new free work yesterday: Mobile Suit Baba. According to Arvi, this game draws heavily on another indie game benchmark, Into the Breach. Now, you can experience the distinct joys of both classic titles through this one game.
Baba Is You is my favorite indie game—it's also one of the few games that can't effectively be translated into multiple languages. It's a game about definitions; at the start, Baba Is You. Anything on the map related to Baba is interactable, but as the difficulty increases, you need to change the definition of yourself. Interact with a stone, and the Stone Is You. Interact with weeds, and Weed Is You. The ultimate goal is to get close to Baba, to achieve Baba Is You.
While playing this game, you frequently encounter Eureka moments: so this is another way to solve it! But upon closer consideration, you realize: that the person who designed this is a genius. With close to 100 puzzle levels, it's a series of brilliant mental duels.
Now, inheriting the common strengths of both games, Mobile Suit Baba has officially launched and is free to play during the Christmas period. It maintains the terrain design of Into the Breach, as well as the definitional gameplay of Baba Is You—for instance, if you encounter an insurmountable mountain during battle, you can find a way to change its definition, and then with limited troops and resources, achieve your objective.
Mobile Suit Baba is currently free to claim on Itch.io until December 27 as a generous early holiday gift to all. You can, of course, pay what you want. And after next Wednesday, the game will be available to buy for $4.
