I realize that headline might be a little provocative. Gaming’s greatest series? Really? Well, yes. For my money, at least, no single franchise has had a larger impact on my personal life in video games than Final Fantasy. The original game introduced me to Japanese RPGs. Final Fantasy VI taught me how much a video game story could affect me. Final Fantasy XIV is probably the best MMORPG ever made.

A lot of bad things have happened in 2023, but you know what's been good? Video games! While the games industry has seen a frustrating amount of instability for developers, the actual games they've put out have been incredible. In fact, we'd argue this has been one of the best years for new games in the past decade—maybe ever! With all that in mind, narrowing down our favorites wasn't easy. Last week, TapTap's editors and other staff members put our heads together and voted on the games we absolutely couldn't forget and felt deserved special honors, even in a year full of amazing releases.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom came out way back in May, but from the first time I glued a sword to another sword, I knew it would be one of my favorite games of the year. It manages to be so many things at the same time, from a physics sandbox to a puzzle-lover’s playground to a shockingly detailed engineering simulation. Oh, and it also happens to be a phenomenal Zelda game. Most games are filled with boundaries and restrictions, but in Tears of the Kingdom, you can do just about anything you want to do if you can find a way to make it work. In the ever-expansive world of video games, where each title vies for attention, it can be easy to overlook truly innovative titles. One game stood out to me in 2023 as a true gem that deserves everyone’s attention: Jusant. Jusant’s slick controls made me feel like I was climbing a mountain, but it was the game’s outside-of-the-box storytelling that really drew me in.  Since the game stars a voiceless protagonist, it uses a unique form of show-don’t-tell storytelling to get the narrative across.

Alan Wake II starts off like a gritty detective serial, but it doesn’t take long for reality to break down completely. It whisks players along on a surreal adventure through dreams and memories that is at turns terrifying, grandiose, and hilarious. Baldur’s Gate 3 is our 2023 Game of the Year, and we’re confident that it’ll be remembered fondly in the years and decades to come as one of the most important games of our time. During the nearly two years I’ve been at TapTap now, I’d estimate that I’ve played and reviewed dozens of gacha games—maybe even coming up on the triple digits by this point. Some of them have been solid, a few have been pretty great, and most have been money-grabbing trash. But none of them have grabbed me in quite the way that Reverse: 1999 did. What is it that sets Reverse: 1999 apart? Well, the biggest thing is exactly what keeps players returning to the gacha over and over again: the characters. There are over fifty playable characters to collect, but unlike in most gacha games, the lower-tier characters aren’t always just boring, low-power nobodies. They’re also all showcased via a really lovely art style.

Sea of Stars is a game that wears its influences on its sleeve. The battle system blends the timed hit system of Super Mario RPG with the team tech attacks from Chrono Trigger. Some boss sprites and attacks look like they came straight out of Final Fantasy. The entire game is littered with references to Super Nintendo classics, like Secret of Evermore and Breath of Fire. But even though Sea of Stars pays homage to RPGs of the past, it still manages to feel fresh and new.

After nearly forty years of smashing blocks and stomping on Goombas, it feels like Mario’s done everything he could possibly do: He’s piloted an airplane, rode multiple dinosaurs, fought sumo wrestlers, turned himself into a human balloon, and dressed up like everything from a penguin to a cat. But this year, after a long, painful wait, Mario finally returned in his first 2D adventure in more than a decade, and somehow, the series feels more innovative than ever.
