Square Enix has spent the past few years rebuilding a lot of its old-school credibility with a bunch of high-quality pixel-art games using what that publisher calls "HD-2D" visuals. Think stuff like Octopath Traveler, where it's using pixel visuals that would feel at home on the Super Nintendo, but with a level of quality that classic hardware couldn't possibly pull off. It's a wonder that more other publishers and developers haven't tried to follow Square's example, which is why I was immediately interested in Knightingale, a gacha game with JRPG aesthetics and an absolutely beautiful look being created by NetEase. And while the first closed beta for Knightingale definitely has some very big technical issues, I'm impressed and cautiously optimistic with the actual game here.

SHOULD I PLAY BLACK CLOVER M? Yes! As long as you enjoy anime stories and don’t mind the gacha gameplay loop, Black Clover M is a great choice. Even as someone who was only barely familiar with the long-running manga and anime it’s based on, this adaptation quickly pulled me in with rock-solid turn-based RPG gameplay and exploration, alongside a well-told story that includes scenes pulled directly from the show. Yes, everybody that plays this game knows this: Guardian Tales is the most generous gacha game I've ever played, because it gives you so many great characters from the start and it is also generous in terms of resources to upgrade them. I would also recommend this game for its compelling story, thrilling battles and intricate puzzles. You won't be disappointed or bored by this game for sure.

I love tower defense games, but I've played so many over the years that it's tough to find one that does something new. With that in mind, Defense Derby definitely surprised and impressed me! It starts out looking like the typical gacha-heavy, merge-style tower defense game that's become so popular on mobile in recent years, but there's a lot more going on here. The real core of Defense Derby's brilliance is in the method of recruiting new units for the four players going against each other in any given match. In between waves of monster attacks, a single unit will be made available, and players must each put in a bid for that unit. The player with the highest bid (or players, if multiple players bid the same amount) pay that price and get the unit in exchange.

I've said this before, but Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe is one hell of a generous game! Right now, the game is celebrating its 3rd anniversary starting today, June 1st, and they're giving out rewards like there's no tomorrow! Just from the log in bonus, whey're giving us an INSANE amount of gacha currency and gacha tickets this month! SHOULD I PLAY ECHOCALYPSE: SCARLET COVENANT? Don’t play this. Echocalypse: Scarlet Covenant doesn’t present anything unique that could differentiate it from the hundreds of other boring gacha games out there. The gameplay has no depth, the characters have no personality, and the storyline isn’t exciting at all. There’s just no reason to give this game any time. SHOULD I PLAY TOKYO GHOUL: BREAK THE CHAINS? Skip it, unless you’re really, really into Tokyo Ghoul. Tokyo Ghoul: Break the Chains presents the exact same stuff I’ve seen a million times before across the long string of samey mobile gacha games I’ve tried over the years. It doesn’t contain an original idea in its gameplay or design. This lack of originality would make for a boring game no matter what, but it’s especially disappointing given the brilliance of the anime, light novel series, and manga it’s based on.

SHOULD I PLAY DISGAEA 7? Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is a return to form for the Disgaea series. It’s a perfect blend of grinding, boundary-breaking gameplay, and silly storytelling. If you’re not a fan of the franchise, it probably won’t win you over, but if you’ve enjoyed other Disgaea titles or are curious about the series, this is a game you won’t want to miss. I love tower defense games, and I have a self-admitted weakness for gacha when it's done right, so of course Watcher of Realms was going to appeal to me! In this title, each of my towers was represented in the form of a character I could pull from the gacha and power up individually through leveling, equipping gear, and so on. It's sort of like Defense Derby, but with a more traditional (read: boring) high fantasy visual style.

I have been playing it for a weak now and now it's my favorite game,  the art style is great the characters and story is just done right, the gameplay it's also great with the different Machanics characters present

Both the art style and moment-to-moment combat of Myth: Gods of Asgard are very clearly inspired by one obvious source: Hades, the beloved roguelite action-RPG from Supergiant Games. That comparison may set Myth up for some unfortunate disappointment, however. It's not that Myth is bad; it's just not easy to live up to one of the best games of the last decade! Once I got past that initial stumbling block, though, I was pretty quickly won over by what Myth: Gods of Asgard offers. I played through stories plucked from Norse mythology and unlocked four playable characters—Brynhild, Siegfrid, Thor, and Ullr. Each of these heroes has a unique main weapon along with their own special abilities and general feel to combat. But they all feel really great, and in general the game does a solid job of emulating the fast-paced, responsive battles of Hades.

The best proof I can give that Tower of God: New World is actually worth it compared to the average idle gacha game? Well, playing it was enough to convince me to actually check out the Tower of God manhwa and anime series, both of which I was completely unfamiliar with prior to checking out New World. It takes a damn good game to have that effect on me. Part of the reason Tower of God: New World actually pulls off that impressive feat is that it actually does a great job of presenting the story from the source material. New World has a ton of different modes, but there are two I spent most of my time in: adventure and story.

Infinite Borders is A gacha-style strategy game entering its closed beta test phase. And though it's gotten quite the hype in Asia, my first thought was, is this just another PTW strategy game? And although I didn't hit any paywalls in my playthrough, there are certainly things that stood out (for better and for worse), which ultimately left me thinking that Infinite Borders is worth keeping an eye on.
