Known in the West as Yakuza Online, it is a title developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (an internal division of Sega), supervised by Masayoshi Yokoyama, and directed by Akio Horii for iOS, Android, and PC. The subtitle visible in the image, "黄龍放浪記" (Kōryū Hōrōki), refers to the second part of the main story, which focuses on the character Ryuji Goda.

1) 📝 STORYLINE: The plot of Ryu Ga Gotoku Online introduces a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, a former yakuza member with a strong sense of honor and a larger-than-life personality. After being betrayed and serving a long prison sentence, Ichiban returns to society to find a completely changed world and a fragmented yakuza organization. The story unfolds through criminal intrigue, fragile alliances, and power struggles, maintaining the classic narrative style of the Yakuza series: intense drama, humorous moments, and deep characters. Meanwhile, the second part of the storyline (Kōryū Hōrōki) brings Ryuji Goda to the forefront, offering an alternative perspective and expanding the narrative universe with events and backstories related to his past and ambitions. The game thus expands the saga's lore, connecting to the main events of the series and introducing new protagonists and antagonists.

2) 🕹️ GAMEPLAY: The gameplay departs from the classic action titles of the main series, adopting a turn-based RPG system with gacha elements. We'll build a team of iconic characters and new faces, each with specific abilities and strategic roles, such as:

- Kazuma Kiryu: The legendary protagonist of the main series;

- Goro Majima: Known as the "Mad Dog of Shimano";

- Shun Akiyama: Manager of Sky Finance;

- Haruka Sawamura: Key character and central figure of the series;

- Daigo Dojima: Sixth president of the Tojo Clan;

- Taiga Saejima: Once infamous for the murder of 18 people;

- Makoto Date: A police detective and recurring ally;

- Masumi Arakawa: Patriarch of the Arakawa family;

- Jo Sawashiro: Captain of the Arakawa family and one of the main antagonists;

- Mitsuo Yasumura: A member of the Arakawa family and a friend of Ichiban;

- Mayumi Seto: A young woman who joins Ichiban in the game;

Battles are partially idle, but require tactical skill and team management. The progression system includes: character leveling, card/hero collection via gacha, limited events and daily quests, and PvE and PvP modes. There's also a management component, where you develop activities and accumulate resources to improve your roster.

3) 💡 GRAPHICS & SOUND: Visually, the game maintains a style faithful to the Yakuza series, with well-crafted character models and fluid animations for a mobile title. The cutscenes are well-crafted and often accompanied by high-quality Japanese voice acting. The urban settings recreate the typical atmosphere of Kamurocho, albeit with a lower level of detail than the console games. The soundtrack remains consistent with the franchise: energetic during combat and more emotional during narrative moments.

4) 🦾 PERSONAL CONCLUSION: Ryu Ga Gotoku Online is an interesting experience for fans of the saga who want to delve into new characters and side stories. However, the gacha system and more automated gameplay may not satisfy those looking for the direct action typical of the main series. It remains a solid mobile title, with an engaging narrative and a strong connection to the Yakuza universe. Given the global success of the series, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio under Sega, the mobile gacha model and strong focus on the Japanese market have complicated international distribution. In fact, an official localization in English or other Western languages has never arrived, despite the growing popularity of the Yakuza series (now also known as Like a Dragon). I was fortunate enough to play it as a mobile beta tester and recommend it especially to fans of the series and lovers of strategy RPGs.
