Knightingale is a JRPG mobile game with rogue-like elements by Netease, featuring a perfect blend of classic pixel elements and stunning medieval fantasy art style. My first impression of this game was almost like a mobile version of Octopath Traveler. Closed beta test starts today until July 17. This test has no limit on the number of participants.
Gameplay
The world in Knightingale is totally non-linear. You may go wherever you'd like. Also, members from your party can be switched out at any time, this will be well into the game. You can set out on your journey with a character you love. The in-game world is quite large and contains several different locations for you to explore. Treasure chests and some hidden blinking spots are available for rewards. Upon entering a town, you will be able to visit different buildings and people. However, while there are a lot of villagers in each region and a seemingly great number of places to explore, this isn't helped anything by the line or two of dialogue they've been given straight out of a generic 1990s JRPG.
Combat
Identifying and exploiting enemy weaknesses is at the core of combat in Knightingale. Each character can equip two weapons, and you can switch between the two stances at any time during combat. There are seven weapon types and five element types in the game. You can deal extra damage to units when using an opposing element.Skill points (SP) help to keep combat interesting and balanced. There're two different skill modes: Normal attack and SP attack. Normal attack increases SP so that you can use SP attacks. The SP cap in battle is 8 points. The SP system adds a much-needed element of strategy and resource management to battles. By defeating monsters, you can gain Soul Points. When Souls Points max at 5, you can use powerful Soul Skills.
Graphics
Beautiful pixel art graphics and hand-drawn 2D characters. If you're a fan of Octopath's graphical style, it's gorgeous.
Audio
If there's one thing anyone can appreciate about Knightingale, it's the soundtrack. Each region and story-related battle have its own theme with motifs that tie into one another, the composition, instrumentation, and variety is impeccable. This is one of the very few games that prominently features a variety of real instruments. The soundtrack is no small part of why this is one of my personal favorites so, even if you don't end up playing the game, consider listening to it elsewhere.
MONETIZATION
Knightingale adopts a free-to-play model. Players don't need to pay anything to get this Octopath Traveler-like game on mobile. You can use in-game purchases get some resources or gacha tickets. I hope the paid content won't affect the game balance when it launches officially.
