Platform: PC, XBOX, X/S, PS4, PS5
Genre: Action-Adventure, Open World, Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk
Released: December 10th, 2020
Overview
Not a big fan of the game and dislike individuals who think it's good? That's a reasonable judgment, given the road they chose by releasing it as an unfinished product, and I agree that it's a massive waste of time to assist developers many years later, since it simply fuels their drive to do it again, potentially causing many other developers to dip their toes in money with no product mentality.
However, regardless of that. I try to be extremely forthcoming in giving games an opportunity to recover, as they frequently do, even if my experience was highly toxic, and there is still a lingering sense of loathing and disappointment.
I strive to find the good in the terrible. CyberPunk 2077 did not have a successful launch. It was a catastrophic failure in recent times for video games. They still made money, but they also lost $51 million in lawsuits and reimbursements. Most crucially, they lost the trust of the community that had been rallying behind them.
This is the most immersive CyberPunk and Sci-Fi looking game that you can purchase and play today. Which is something I never thought I'd be able to say. It's still not up to the standard they promised us in 2020, but it's getting there.
PATCH 2.1
I refunded the game back in 2020. The game was simply too silent; there was no music, no atmosphere, and in order to hear the fantastic music, you had to be in a car all of the time, which didn't always work. Patch 2.1 addresses this by allowing you to play music wherever and whenever you want, because it just makes sense, we are partially cybernetic after all. I didn't think it had to take this long to implement.
The initial gameplay wasn't all that great because it was clumsy and unresponsive, especially while sprinting and crouching (to activate a slide), it was just not pleasant to play. This patch includes some more modifications aimed at addressing this. Sliding remains cumbersome, since you frequently become caught in crouch and unable to sprint out of it, forcing you to manually click crouch to continue running.
There are now more street racing changes and driving changes that enable for street-wide pursuits after engaging in a gig run by a rival gang. That is in addition to all of the other updates made to the game since 2020. It has made the game more immersive and intensely interesting for the player if you're willing to swallow your distaste for the developers past crimes. These changes are all very helpful.
Graphics & Presentation
If my memory serves me correctly, there were no features like windows being shot out of cars or even bullet holes in windshields back then. So it's great to finally have some depth to these features. Your cars become increasingly battered, shredded, and crushed inwards as a result of impacts and bullet holes. The world around you no longer lags or breaks, causing you to crash. This CyberPunk aesthetic's nightlife and even daily life is quite breathtaking. "NO YOU'RE BREATHTAKING!" Oh, stop you.
Comparing the visuals and presentation to the incomplete original is akin to comparing a blank canvas to a Da Vinci art piece. While yes, a lot of us were upset, holding grudges doesn't allow you to move on and accept change. You'll want to spend your time driving and exploring the city, taking on assignments and gigs from all over the world as they come your way, all while moving through the main story.
Features
It's not only a matter of playing the game and following the story. There's a lot here to delve into right now. You could be walking down the street and overhear someone discussing a recent event, and you could gather more information to assist them while also increasing your street cred to unlock more abilities and stats. There's also a lot of build diversity, especially with all of the new fighting elements, street racing, crafting, mini-games, dating, and so much more thanks to patch (2.1) and (2.0).
You can spend the majority of your time immersed in the story, but at some point the game will ask you to explore for a while. Leading you to answer emails and phone calls from across the city to keep you busy. There is a lot of downtime in between each big task, so you feel forced to explore in a good way, which then compels you to explore even more. Who knows, with some decent dialogue and world or character building, you might possibly launch a full hidden event with powerful weapons!
Conclusion
It's all done well and doesn't leave me agitated, wondering why this or that isn't a feature or how much I despised this game and everyone who helped create it.
Now that the game is fully functional, I'm having a terrific time with it. The bugs I've experienced aren't all that bad. It's basically all NPC problems that are more humorous than anything, particularly with the AI. That's probably one of the few things I don't enjoy about the game as they claim to have addressed the AI, yet it still acts like your normal storm trooper, aimless and roaming with no heart or soul.
The most they've done with the AI is giving them the ability to run you off the road, but that's about it because they get gunned down regardless of whether it's a 4 or 5 star chase against you. It's a shame the creators put themselves in this situation. I doubt many people will want to return to this game. I'll keep playing it and having fun with it till I finish the DLC and then go on to other things.
If you're on the fence about whether or not to buy the game. I was among many who were dissatisfied but not surprised when the game was released. I don't keep grudges; a good game is one that is playable and does not frustrate me. This is an excellent game to play right now, particularly for the narrative story telling.
