E3, or more formally the Electronic Entertainment Expo, has been officially shut down and will not be returning, following several tumultuous years that saw its importance in the games industry dramatically reduced.
The Entertainment Software Association, the non-profit industry group that has hosted E3 since its inception in 1995, told The Washington Post that the decision was based on several factors, but perhaps the most important one was that “companies now have access to consumers and to business relations through a variety of means, including their own showcases.”
Over the past six years, E3’s key industry partners have pulled out of the expo and established their own shows. PlayStation established its own E3-adjacent event in 2018, while Microsoft and Bethesda both moved their presentations to another venue, away from the main E3 location in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest presentation supplanted E3 as the annual June showcase for upcoming games.
For decades, E3 was an industry- and press-only event, but in 2019, the ESA began selling tickets to the general public to try to help restore the show to its former glory—but that plan would prove to be short lived, as COVID-19 precautions prevented in-person events for the following two years and many publishers discovered that doing their own online presentations was preferable.
“After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye,” the ESA wrote in a post to social media. “Thanks for the memories.” The post is signed, “GGWP.”
I'm very lucky and thankful I got the chance to go to E3 several times before this, but it was definitely less and less relevant as the years went on. I'll miss the E3 buzz though!
Still remember when first time saw the Spider Man and God of War at E3...
