This year has been full of new experiences for me. I’ve always been more into competitive multiplayer games, so getting to play a lot of unique and unusual single-player titles has really changed my perspective and made me want to try out a ton more games.

If you’d asked me at the start of 2023, I never would have guessed that I’d play some of these games I’m about to talk about, let alone rate them as the best of the year. I’m grateful to have experienced the spectacle offered by these excellent titles. Here are the ten best games I played in 2023.

Cocoon wrapped me in a series of endless puzzles that had me thinking in, out, and around the box. In this expertly crafted puzzle game, I dived into the unknown world of an alien creature and learned about its story through the environment. This captivating, mind-bending experience was second to none and remains the best puzzle game I’ve ever played.

Probably the most surprising game on this list was Immortals of Aveum. I didn’t know what to expect jumping into this magic-infused adventure, but I’m glad I took the leap. This fantasy first-person shooter explores an enchanting world ravaged by chaos, destruction, and magic. It’s boosted by a cast of star-studded actors, impeccable storytelling, charming music, and some of the best visuals of any game released in 2023. I know this one went under the radar, so I hope anyone reading this who’s been curious will give it a shot!

Adventure

There are very few video game stories that manage to move me as much as that of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. Coming from a broken household, the character of Cereza tells a story of loneliness, anxiety, and fear—and overcoming all those incredibly complex and difficult emotions. And I won’t lie: It made me bawl my eyes out. I’ve never played a game that I related to so closely before this. Even beyond all that powerful emotion, Cereza and the Lost Demon also offers impeccable gameplay, exploration, progression, and visuals.

Alright, I couldn’t totally ignore competitive multiplayer games. The Finals is one of those rare situations where I struggled to find a single thing to criticize about it. This game offers all the intense action I expect from a great shooter, but polished to a degree where everything feels extremely smooth and dynamic. There’s a wide variety of ways to play, and the game just never gets boring. I played in beta, I’ve continued playing since it launched, and I expect to keep playing well into 2024 and hopefully even beyond. I don’t know what greater praise I could offer than that.

Here’s one memory of 2023 I’ll never forget: playing Fire Emblem Engage at midnight while wrapped up in a blanket inside a pillow fort that I built in my living room. Getting to experience Alear’s epic story of death, acceptance, and realization while engaging in complex, tactical turn-based combat made for an immersive and thrilling time. Fire Emblem Engage is one of the best turn-based games I’ve ever played, and it’s also the stepping stone that has introduced me to the world of Fire Emblem.

Let me start by repeating what I said in my review of this game back in October: Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is the best fighting game I’ve ever played. I tried out a lot of fighting games in 2023, but this one really stuck with me, and for good reason. From dynamic combat to legendary cutscenes and stunning visuals to iconic characters, Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections has perfected everything in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series to create the best fighting game in the franchise.

Quite an interesting concept of a game, Deceive Inc. was one of my favorite multiplayer games of 2023. I loved the idea of being a secret spy, recovering intel and data to successfully perform a heist and win the match. Add in other players and a buttload of gunfire, and Deceive Inc. is the perfect replacement for Among Us fans who’d prefer playing a first-person shooter.

At this point, MiHoYo practically owns me with each fantastic game it releases. Honkai: Star Rail was no surprise in that regard. It captivated and charmed me with its impeccable blend of storytelling, gameplay, exploration, and freedom. There aren’t many gacha games I’ve grown to actually like and even willingly spend money on, but Honkai: Star Rail was a perfect exception

Hogwarts Legacy lives up to its, well, legacy. This beautiful game brings the world of the Harry Potter franchise to life and fills it with mysteries to uncover and quests to complete. It captured everything that makes the franchise so lovable and delivered an exciting new storyline for fans like myself to explore to our heart’s content.

Wow, 2023 was overwhelming when it comes to great games. Our official TapTap Game of the Year 2023 list could only fit so many entries—ten, to be exact—so this week each of the editors on TapTap's North American team will be posting our personal picks as well. Starting with me! One caveat: Because so many awesome games were released this year, there are some that I haven't had the chance to play yet but I'm fairly confident would make my list if I had. For example, I haven't even started Baldur's Gate 3. I know, I know! I'm hoping to play it over the holidays! But since I haven't touched it yet, I kept it off my personal list...for now.

A lot of bad things have happened in 2023, but you know what's been good? Video games! While the games industry has seen a frustrating amount of instability for developers, the actual games they've put out have been incredible. In fact, we'd argue this has been one of the best years for new games in the past decade—maybe ever! With all that in mind, narrowing down our favorites wasn't easy. Last week, TapTap's editors and other staff members put our heads together and voted on the games we absolutely couldn't forget and felt deserved special honors, even in a year full of amazing releases.

No matter what your tastes are, it’s hard to deny that 2023 has been a banner year for games. From blockbuster sequels to indie darlings to a boatload of fishing games, there’s really been something for everyone. There were a lot of releases this year that deserve recognition, but these titles have a special place in my heart. Counting down from ten to one, these were my favorite games of 2023.
