Game: Enshrouded
Platform: PC
Genre: Open World, Survival, Base Building
Overview
Enshrouded took the steam charts by storm during the 2023's Steam Next Fest, and I must say. I was quite impressed with how well it was progressing as an in development game, despite the bugs and graphic flaws that plagued the game during this stage. It's an open world, base builder though I wouldn't say it's really that in-depth. It's quite a casual game that looks pretty.
It was fun to play with friends, which is what it was built for, so if you're looking to try something new like Minecraft, Palworld, Ark, or Valheim. It does have several major flaws that can make or break the game for you as a whole but it's still fun to play.
Issues
I noted before that this is a game built for close friends and solo players. There are no chat features and probably never will be, and there is no plan for PvP, but that doesn't stop people from ruining the experience for many of the casual players. If someone new to the game joins and leaves their server open, anyone can join, rush their base, steal literally everything on their server, and then leave. There is absolutely no protection stopping anyone from doing this. It's pathetic.
Imagine you or another person spends 5 hours farming for materials you need a lot of, most of which are time gated, you're about to use the materials on your final return to base, and then you find everything you worked for is gone because you were literally targeted by a selfish player with no respect for anyone but themselves.
I did also have some troubles with the construction UI it wouldn't allow me choose a pattern to craft and was just stuck on itself halfway through, so I eventually quit constructing and began to proceed more with the quests.
Graphics & Presentation
Compared to the Demo, which was once again quite rustic and in need of significant graphical settings modifications. It operated wonderfully at 60 frames per second but would not go any higher; for whatever reason, this does not affect me, but it may bother others. Good soundtrack, and generally the world appeared to be extremely beautiful, although a bit devoid of life because you had to fill it by discovering all of the souls of the NPCs in the ruins and basically crafting a world for them.
Gameplay
If you enjoy running around searching for secrets. This is not the game for you; rather, it is a game for those who enjoy making and creating content within video games, particularly with the support of their close friends.
Nothing here is difficult. You gather materials, utilize them to create facilities or gear, travel to quest locations, accomplish them, and repeat until everything is unlocked at that point you're basically using your ability to craft and mold a world.
Personally, I didn't get very far despite playing as much as I did with the Demo, and this was entirely due to the loss of the majority of my really difficult-to-obtain resources, which I had spent hours accumulating because I had left my server open.
Aside from that, I was unable to access most of the newer content because the resources I had obtained were required to unlock more gear and base functions. I just lost interest as it was a very crushing experience. Please lock your server.
Conclusion
Aside from the fact that I am very disappointed in the developers for doing such an underhanded thing as allowing anyone to access chests, pick up your base with no anti-grief settings, and no way for you to recover other than "lock the server."
My encounter this time around the game is fine for those who want to relax and be creative, but it is not a game designed for people who want action, PvP, or challenging content or anyone looking to make some new friends in game.
