Skyrim is an excellent game, however I cannot really recommend it at base as the content is stale. Purely rating it on a base content standard, only really the Dragonborn DLC is interesting, most side content is better if expanded by mods, the game in general, is better expanded with mods.
The base game can be fun, but it is much much better modded.
Personal mod recommendations for first timers (These generally just expand on the games content, not effecting any vanilla content.)
Forgotten City- DLC Sized mod
Project AHO- DLC Sized mod
Falskaar- DLC Sized mod (albeit this one is quite dated being one of the first Skyrim "DLC" sized mods, it can be pretty fun as a start for your modding journey)
Lucien- Follower
and if you have a decent rig you may want to add these to fix the aging graphics
[Standard graphics, this is vanilla+]
ELFX or Lux
Skyland AiO
SMIM
NAT Weathers (not to be confused with NAT III ENB)
[Parallaxed graphics, this is Skyrim if it was made post 2018)
ELFX Parallax or Lux Unofficial Parallax
Skyland Landscapes Parallax or SRP Landscapes addon (Fills in the gaps of 20xx)
Community shaders with the parallax addon OR ENB (ENB is not recommended for normal rigs.)
Skyrim 20xx Downscale or normal 20xx
Any weather mod if not using an ENB.
If you need any mod suggestions feel free to ask. I have way too many hours playing and modding the game.

While the writing can be spotty, especially in Mass Effect 3, the Mass Effect Trilogy offers a fun experience and at least 50 hours of game play.
The gameplay in Mass Effect 1 can be rather boring, with some reedeming factors, but if you're running on PC, just watch a recap and use a save editor to setup Mass Effect 2 for your liking.
Oh I didn't mention? Mass Effect offers the ability to make choices that have lasting effects over the trilogy, while most if not all of these effects are minor, it still does this, making it one of the few games where your choices have the artificial gravity of choice.
Now to Mass Effect 2
The side content in Mass Effect 2 is fantastic, specifically the loyalty missions. The main quest, as many others have stated would fit better as Mass Effect 1s main quest... and well the whole game is considered a side quest by the community as a lot of the main story gets retconned in ME3... yeah.
Anyway, the combat is a massive upgrade from ME1, making the game a solid and fun to playthrough.
I have not completed Mass Effect 3 yet so I cannot give a proper description.
Other than that the combat was yet again upgraded, to be more like Gears of War, so if you like the Gears of War series, you will like the combat in Mass Effect 3.

If there is a game that fits the description of old but gold it is Left 4 Dead 2. I don't even know what to say about this game, it has fantastic modding community, solid gameplay that is still fun over 10 years later, and almost every aspect of it can be changed by modding.
If that is not enough to convince you, I should add that it has all the content from Left 4 Dead 1 and that you can mod it to be a tacticool gun simulator.

Obligatory Fortnite addition for clicks... Okay, okay, I actually do recommend Fortnite C5S1.
Other than the rough start with the Sniper Meta that made Zero Build feel like an accurate depiction of why snipers were so hated in World War 1, the gameplay of C5S1 has been solid. The developers have listened to player feedback on some key aspects leading to the update having a good map, good movement, and a decent weapon balance.
I am not a Fortnite no life, so my review will just end here awkwardly, and read like some IGN post. This review is not paid for by Epic... x3
