Hey everyone! You know how most games make you the hero, charging into battle to defeat the Demon King? Well, this time, the roles are reversed! In Skul: The Hero Slayer, you play as a tiny skeleton warrior fighting to rescue your Demon King from the so-called heroes.
I played this game a while ago, and the fast-paced action, unique Skull-swapping mechanic, and tough enemies kept me hooked.
Overview
Skul: The Hero Slayer is a 2D action roguelike developed by SouthPAW Games. It plays a lot like Dead Cells or Hades, but with a unique twist—you can swap heads (Skulls) to change abilities. This feel like that old cartoon Anpanman where everytime he fight his father give him a new head of bread.
Each skull gives Skul a completely different fighting style, from fast swordplay to heavy magic attacks. This means every head feels different, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting.
Gameplay Experience
One thing I loved about this game is how smooth and fast-paced the combat feels. This feel like playing old Metroid mission zero game.
Key features
✅ Skull-swapping mechanic – You can carry two Skulls at a time, switching between them in battle.
✅ Over 30 different Skulls – Each has unique skills, weapons, and playstyles (like a Samurai Skull or a Demon Slayer Skull).
✅ Challenging but fun roguelike combat – You die, get stronger, and go again.
✅ Insane boss fights – Some of the bosses feel like mini Dark Souls fights—fast, deadly, and intense.
At first, I was just running in and smashing buttons, like I do in every game. but as I got better Skulls and learned enemy attack patterns, the combat became WAY more satisfying. Tell me you like smashing buttons like me.
Controls
The controls are super responsive, which is crucial for a fast roguelike like this. Dodging is smooth and snappy – Feels great when you perfectly time a dodge. Attacks and abilities feel weighty – Whether you're using a big heavy Skull or a fast one, combat feels impactful. Switching Skulls mid-fight feels seamless – Adds a layer of strategy and combo potential.
I played this with a controller, and it felt perfect—if you’re playing on Mobile, I’d recommend using one.
Graphics and Sound
The pixel-art style is gorgeous, and every Skull design looks detailed and unique.
Smooth animations – The attack animations feel fluid and satisfying.
Bright, colorful world – Even though the game has a dark theme, the visuals feel lively.
Epic soundtrack – The boss fight music gets you hyped up, and the level themes are catchy.
Story and Characters
I don't want to give you spoilers because I also hate spoilers. You’re not a hero—you’re a loyal minion trying to save the Demon King from invading humans, Some NPCs are hilarious and add to the world-building. Twist on the usual hero-villain story – Makes you root for the "bad guys." Not a deep RPG, but engaging enough to keep you interested.
