Crafting is important, sell it or decompose items is important. When you've died, sometimes you won't lost your item, if you've lost your belongings, no worries, Find lost loots/items in Menu -> TAS, select your lost items then retrieve it in your "Lockers" to equip back your gears(backpack, clothes, and etc).
Store items and Retrieve items, in lockers or our items.
You don't need to push yourself to finish-up the main story missions, but you could try to leveling-up yourself by doing some side-quests/community quests or daily quests, after you feel you are confidence strong enough then try to continue the main story quests.
