[FPS Tips] Master Your Utility: Nades Win Rounds, Not Just Guns

[FPS Tips] Master Your Utility: Nades Win Rounds, Not Just Guns

9 View2025-07-07
Your primary weapon is crucial, but don't sleep on your throwables! Effective utility usage can single-handedly win you engagements, secure objectives, and break enemy setups. Here's how to level up your nade game -

1. Know Your Arsenal (The "What")

Frag Grenades (Frags/HEs): Your primary damage dealers. Perfect for flushing enemies out of cover, clearing tight corners, or finishing off low-HP targets. A well-cooked frag can be devastating.
Smoke Grenades (Smokes): Vision blockers. Use them to create a safe passage across open areas, isolate angles when pushing a site, cover a defuse/plant, or help a teammate retreat. Think of them as temporary walls.
Flashbangs (Flashes/Bangs): Your entry tools and duel-winners. A perfectly timed flash can leave opponents completely blind and vulnerable, giving you a free kill or a safe entry.
Incendiaries (Mollies/Thermites/Fire Grenades): Area denial and damage-over-time. Excellent for preventing pushes through chokepoints, clearing out common hiding spots (like behind boxes or under ledges), or delaying a bomb defuse. The burn forces enemies to move.
Decoys/Sound Grenades (Game Specific): If your game has them, learn their niche uses. Decoys can create confusion by faking footsteps or gunfire, potentially drawing enemy attention away from your actual position or push.

2. Strategic Application (The "Why" and "When")

Initiating Fights: Use flashes or frags to soften up a position before you or your team pushes in. A good entry flash can be the difference between a successful site take and a failed one.
Clearing Angles & Corners: Instead of face-checking every dangerous spot, use a frag or molly to force any hidden enemies out or damage them.
Objective Play:Attack: Smoke off key defensive sightlines when planting the bomb. Use MOLLEs to prevent a quick defuse.
Defense: Use incendiaries to delay pushes onto a site. Smoke off the bomb to buy time for a defuse. Flash into a site retake.
Creating Space & Controlling Tempo: Smokes and Mollies can dictate where enemies can and cannot go, allowing your team to control the flow of the round.
Post-Plant Scenarios: Knowing default plant spots and common molly lineups to deny the defuse is crucial.

3. Throwing Techniques (The "How")

Standard Throws (Left/Right Click): Understand the difference in throwing distance and arc for your game's primary and alternate throw buttons.Cooking Grenades (Frags): Learn the fuse timer for your frag grenades.
"Cooking" them (holding the throw button before releasing) ensures they detonate closer to your target, giving them less time to react. Don't overcook, though!
Lineups & Bank Shots: This is where skill truly shines. Learn specific lineups for smokes, mollies, and even flashes that land perfectly in common or critical spots from a safe distance. Practice bouncing grenades off walls (bank shots) to hit tricky angles or surprise opponents. YouTube is your friend for learning these!
Pop-Flashes: Throwing a flashbang so it detonates just as it clears a corner or obstacle, giving enemies minimal time to turn away.
Jump Throws/Run Throws: Some games allow for different throw distances or trajectories when jumping or running. Master these for more advanced utility placement.
Pro Tip: Don't hoard your utility! It's better to use a smoke or flash to gain an advantage or secure a kill than to die with all your nades still in your inventory. Communicate with your team about who has what utility and coordinate your throws for maximum impact.
