Growing up, I did most of my gaming at home, but I still have some amazing memories of arcade games. There was something truly special about putting a coin in a machine and starting a new adventure, knowing that I could only go as far as my quarters could take me. Nearly all of my arcade sessions ended in defeat, but whenever I made it a little further my last playthrough, it felt like an accomplishment.

With randomized elements keeping runs fresh and unlockable characters to collect, I was hooked chasing high scores for hours. The ability to tackle missions in any order and switch between fighters mid-battle provides strategic depth missing from retro brawlers. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a 2023 roguelike beat 'em up game developed by Secret Base and published by Arc System Works. It is a spiritual successor to the 1989 arcade game Double Dragon II: The Revenge, and features a new story, characters, and gameplay mechanics. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic New York City, where the Double Dragon brothers, Billy and Jimmy Lee, must fight their way through hordes of enemies to rescue Marian, their girlfriend. The game features a roguelite structure, meaning that each playthrough is different, with new enemies, items, and challenges to face. Players can choose from four playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles.
