Growing up, I did most of my gaming at home, but I still have some amazing memories of arcade games. There was something truly special about putting a coin in a machine and starting a new adventure, knowing that I could only go as far as my quarters could take me. Nearly all of my arcade sessions ended in defeat, but whenever I made it a little further my last playthrough, it felt like an accomplishment.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a 2023 roguelike beat 'em up game developed by Secret Base and published by Arc System Works. It is a spiritual successor to the 1989 arcade game Double Dragon II: The Revenge, and features a new story, characters, and gameplay mechanics. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic New York City, where the Double Dragon brothers, Billy and Jimmy Lee, must fight their way through hordes of enemies to rescue Marian, their girlfriend. The game features a roguelite structure, meaning that each playthrough is different, with new enemies, items, and challenges to face. Players can choose from four playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles.

With randomized elements keeping runs fresh and unlockable characters to collect, I was hooked chasing high scores for hours. PLAY IT OR SKIP IT? Play it if you’re a fan of old-school beat ’em ups or are looking for a couch co-op game. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise Of The Dragons delivers all the excitement of a retro arcade game, but it also finds ways to mix up that classic formula. You can tackle levels in any order, earn power-ups for your fighters, and even collect tokens you can use to continue your game after an untimely defeat. There was always something for me to unlock, like new characters or music tracks, and no two runs felt exactly alike, which made the game tough to put down. It’s an incredibly addictive single-player game, and I’m willing to bet it’s even more fun when you have some friends to join you.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a super nostalgic game for me as I remember playing the original game on my friends console as a kid, and also playing the gameboy version as well. So to see this series reappear was a great nostalgic trip for me. The gameplay is a lot of fun, with it's fast paced combat system and hard hitting combos. You can play this on your own, or with a friend and each player can control 2 characters in the game. You do this by a type of tagging system where you swap between the two playable characters as often as you like.
