A Hidden Gem That Deserved More Attention
Downstairs is one of those rare games that quietly hides far more depth than it initially shows. At first glance it may look like a simple indie roguelike, but the longer you play, the more you realize how many systems, secrets, and emergent mechanics are layered underneath.
What makes this game special is how items and weapons interact in unexpected ways.
For example:
Using a mirror together with a weapon allows you to create a temporary clone of yourself that attacks enemies with the same weapon.
A simple glass bottle can be used as a blunt weapon, but when it breaks, it turns into a bleeding weapon — changing its function mid-combat.
Some items are intentionally absurd and risky, like a military helmet that can cause enemies (and sometimes you) to explode.
The game also encourages morally questionable choices in interesting ways.
You can rob shops, and if you kill shopkeepers enough times, you unlock a new playable character — the guard. This kind of progression feels dark, funny, and surprisingly coherent with the game’s tone.
There are many playable characters to unlock, many hats to upgrade, and many active items to experiment with. Boss fights are generally well-balanced (sometimes tough, but fair), and even after finishing the game once, it opens up further layers instead of simply ending.
Even small quality-of-life options are thoughtfully included — for example, you can adjust the brightness in the settings, making exploration and combat easier on the eyes.
Not Perfect, but Brave
Downstairs is not flawless:
Many items lack clear descriptions.
Hat upgrades don’t show exact percentage bonuses.
Some mechanics are intentionally vague.
The game hasn’t received updates since 2023.
However, these issues feel more like the result of an experimental design philosophy, not laziness. This is a game made for players who enjoy experimenting, discovering mechanics on their own, and accepting failure as part of learning.
Final Thoughts
It’s honestly a shame that Downstairs never reached a wider audience. Despite being available for free and updated for a time, it feels like a game that could have built a cult following if more people had discovered it.
If you enjoy experimental roguelikes, emergent gameplay, and games that don’t explain everything upfront — Downstairs is absolutely worth your time. This game in itch.io
