I recently had the pleasure of playing the Zombie Survival game 'Dysmantle' and I was super happy with how the game played. In Dysmantle you start off as a lone survivor who has run out of food after the zombie apocalypse, and you must come up from your shelter to see what you can find.
You're first tasked with finding materials to upgrade your crowbar with after finding an abandoned camp. You have to destroy the wooden chairs and barbecue stands to get the scrap wood and metal needed to upgrade. Once you have the items you go back to your camp to upgrade the crowbar. Now with your upgraded crowbar, you can break through larger obstacles. The game does have quests for you to complete in order to get your story going.
Combat has you holding down to do a power swing on zombies, and tapping to do light attacks. You can also lock on to your targets so you can more easily attack them. If you die, you respawn back at your last camp that you had found and you lose all items in your inventory, so its wise to visit your stash box frequently if you don't want items lost. However if you can make it back to where you died, you can reclaim all items you dropped.
It is advisable to strafe and run around your attacking zombies in order to avoid their attacks, and timing your power attacks to do big damage. If you get swarmed, it's very easy to die since your health is quite small. You can also dodge in the game, this comes in handy to avoid zombie attacks, both up close and from range. Out of combat gameplay involves a lot of searching and destroying items, you can control the camera of the game too, you can swivel and move the camera up and down slightly.
But mainly moving the camera left to right and rotate will be the most important camera functions. Sitting at the campfire will automatically replenish your health and item supplies. So if you're health is low, or you feel safer with a full bar of hp, even if its not that low, go back to your camp and click on the camp fire. However resting at the campfire will reset your zombie killing progress and all zombies will be back in their found spots.
You can apparently stop zombies from respawning however but you need to invent a Link Tower Toolkit and install the Deadly Transmission to one of the Link Towers.Something I did notice though is that when you kill a boss, they do not respawn even after sitting at the campfire. When you level up, you can go back to your camp and click on the camp fire, and choose to build new recipes if you have the materials to do so. If you don't however, you can track the items needed, so that you can easily find them when searching.
The amount of things you can craft from the crafting tree is pretty impressive. There's a tree for resource managemenet, exploration, healing and survival, movement, combat, throwables, even digging, farming and fishing as well as for outfits. There's plenty to craft in the game and it all seems very exciting. You can also choose new skills when you level up too.
The first skill choices I came across was the pack rat, fast learner and scavenger level 1. Since this game seems to have a lot of searching involved in it, I decided to go with the scavenger skill to have a higher chance of finding extra materials. 20% increase in efficiency at level 1.
You must find link towers in new areas in order to open the map for that region. Once you do you can view the map from your mini map on screen and open the map menu to see a much clearer area of the region you're in. Cooking is a thing in the game, however you do not need to cook in order to stay alive. There is no hunger meter in Dysmantle.
Cooking is valuable however because cooking a dish you have learned can give you permanent upgrades to your character. For example, eating the tomato soup that you can craft gives you an extra +5 to hit points! So it is advisable to cook up food when you can! The game does have a day and night cycle, and there is also temperature to pay attention to as well.
This will all come in to play when trying to survive this harsh new world. Visually this game is absolutely gorgeous. With its cartoony 3D aesthetic, it's really quite pretty. With its bright and colorful art style, combined with the zombie apocalypse setting, it makes for a comforting style and yet still creepy enough to watch whats hiding around the corners.
Overall I'd say that Dysmantle is a fantastic premium purchase game that is available on both on pretty much all consoles, mobile and PC. With its gorgeous visuals and fantastic gameplay combined with the fact you can also play this co-op? Throw in a not so hardcore survival zombie game, and you got a pretty fun game with less stress than most of the other more hardcore titles in this genre. I highly recommend this game and you should definitely get it!
