Thronefall recently released in Early Access on Steam and this game is so much fun I didn't want to put it down. The gameplay of Thronefall has you building a base over a period of time, and when you run out of gold you have to brave the night and fend off the enemy forces while trying to keep the heart of your base alive.
You earn gold from the houses, mills and pretty much every building you make, as well as when you kill the enemies. When you survive the night, all the gold will head towards you like you're a gold vacuum cleaner. You can also upgrade your buildings and walls to make them stronger. Also, if you fail to keep your base alive, that's okay, you will level up regardless of winning or losing, and you will get stronger unlocks because you leveled up. Which you can then use in your next attempts.
So even in failure, you will get stronger. This isn't like any normal tower defense style game though, you have to build your base, build a small army, use your resources wisely to find the balance of what you need more importantly for the next upcoming wave. That's why this is more like a hybrid between a base builder game and a tower defense. Since you can't build your base wherever you like.
The game gives you set locations where you can build something. So you can't choose their locations. So you have to decide what is the most important buildings to build, or upgrade. You also have a character that you control, this character can also fight and provide buffs for your army as well as command them on where to go.
So it's a lot more hands on and involved than your normal tower defense game, which is what really made it a lot of fun for me. For example in the last wave, I personally focused on all the catapults and took those out first, in order to try avoid as much damage to my castle walls as possible.
Visually the game looks great too, it's not a demanding visual game but it looks very nice. I love the art style too. It's bright and colorful. And the designs for the buildings, defenses and walls are nice too.
If there's anything I would complain about, it's when there's a huge swarm of enemies and I'm fighting them, it's hard to see my HP bar sometimes. So I die due to not being able to see it.
Other than that, it looks great. Audio wise the game sounds good too. I couldn't hear any poor audio effects, or missing audio while playing. The combat effects are great and all sounds punchy and impactful. The audio is done very well, very impressive.
Overall I'd say that Thronefall is a fantastic base builder tower defense game that is a lot of fun, and it's in early access too, so I was expecting it to be buggy at the least, but I had no issues with the game whatsoever.
It was a smooth experience and a super fun one at that. I highly recommend you get Thronefall if you enjoy base builders and tower defense games. As well as a more involved experience when defending your base. This game is loads of fun and you won't be disappointed.
